Purpose:


The Division of Students works with partners across the University and community to promote student success, and a proud member of the York University learning community.

It is the Division's goal to increase access to the postsecondary experience, to see students thrive and succeed academically, socially, and personally, to encourage students to become engaged learners, and to provide students with resources and support throughout the university to help them achieve their goals.

Reporting to the Vice-Provost Students (VPS), the Assistant Vice Provost, Resources and Strategic Planning (AVPR&SP) is the senior administrator of the Division of Students (the Division).

The AVPR&SP is responsible for managing the full scope of divisional planning and oversight of large complex business operations within the Division's functional units, with a focus on finance, capital projects, space management and human resources.

They undertake significant projects related to promoting student success and direct the implementation of strategic planning objectives.

They provide human resources direction, support, and development, particularly with respect to change management, professional development, decolonization, diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEDI), and benchmarking.

They ensure that student services are run effectively, provide logístical and financial oversight of services, and ensure that services meet appropriate benchmarks and standards.

They also oversee Divisional managerial functions such as health and safety, computing support, physical resources planning and management, and liaison with appropriate departments and divisions of the university.

The role serves on the Vice Provost Students' executive team.

The AVPR&SP is a dynamic, visionary, and inclusive leader, with a deep commitment to innovative and inclusive approaches to student success.

York's Division of Students is building its leadership in innovative and equity-focused programs related to student support, and this role is key to this, particularly in championing a cohesive student (and client)-focused culture of engagement and high-performance across the Division of Students.

The AVPR&SP plays a variety of roles on the Vice Provost, Students' behalf with the overall goal of ensuring that the Division's vision, strategy, priorities, and objectives are understood, supported, and advanced within the context of the University Academic Plan and other strategies and frameworks.

The AVPR & SP is a conduit and key decision-maker on behalf of the Division of Students for campus partnerships and committees to leverage collaboration, expertise and resources.

This role includes communicating and promoting student success priorities and goals to Divisional leadership, other stakeholders inside and outside the Division, and ensuring alignment and integration of the University's and Division's mission with that of other campus partners, and the recruitment and development of the Division's management and staff teams.

Leveraging expertise in strategy and planning, the AVPR&SP provides direction and advice and mobilizes resources to advance and operationalize new strategies, special projects, and initiatives.

The AVPR&SP provides senior leadership and advice to the Vice Provost, Students on matters of policy and procedure, many of which are of a confidential nature, and addresses issues related to Divisional organizational design, financial approvals and alignment of human and financial resources with strategic priorities.

In addition, the AVPR&SP is a champion and advocate for equity, diversity and inclusion and leads by example to create a positive, supportive, and inclusive team environment of high-performance, trust, respect, and collaboration.


Education:

A University degree is required. MBA with specialization in Finance or Management is preferred. professional credentials such as CPA would be an asset.


Experience:

Experience in ABB-like (activity-based budgeting) and shared-services models is essential.

Experience leading a diverse team in an environment of change and managing staff in a unionized environment is also required.


Skills:

Knowledge
Knowledge of space planning and facility management.
Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and employment standards is required.
Understanding and awareness of post-secondary education sector priorities and pressures.
Knowledge and understanding of political trends (government enrolment, budget) to make effective decisions and/or recommendations regarding resource allocation.


Skills:

Demonstrated ability to develop, monitor, modify and measure the effectiveness of a strategic plan and its priorities.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify, analyze and propose solutions for existing issues as well as an ability to anticipate challenges and potential opportunities.
