Position Description:

Surrey Place is seeking an Intercultural Engagement Facilitator. The successful applicant will report to the Manager, Transitional Age Services.

This position will support a unique day treatment classroom model comprised of a multi-disciplinary team in partnership with the Toronto District School Board's Education and Community Partnership Program (ECPP) and the local Indigenous community, to provide meaningful healing, academic support and opportunities for transitional aged youth who have been diagnosed with or who suspect they have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and need therapeutic mental health supports.


This position supports classroom staff members and students grade 10-12 and will facilitate clinical and administrative operations related to the classroom.


Main Responsibilities:


  • Cultivate a thriving relationship within classroom staff to create safety, shared vision and value systems and create space for different ideologies to be honoured to foster an environment of learning and growth.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with Indigenous and nonIndigenous community groups, partner agencies and resources in the larger community.
  • Responsible for ensuring Indigenous rights, EDIA values, program modalities, and Surrey Place's mission statement are upheld within staff practice and program processes.
  • Coordinate and/or create training resources to support staff development.
  • Ensure program operations are in line with Indigenous knowledge, trauma informed approaches and best practices for FASD and other mental/physical health supports and ensure are not contrary to Indigenous values systems, and cultural safety.
  • Provide FASD specific training to members of youth 's transitional team to increase the successful support of students with FASD within mainstream TDSB classrooms.
  • Support families and case management teams with understanding and implementing supportive executive functioning and adaptive life skill strategies.
  • Identify physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health needs of youth so they are holistically met at home and within the community.
  • Develop and monitor services and operations, including waitlists, problem solving as required to facilitate efficient service to clients, and effectively utilize service/staffing capacity.
  • Collaborate with students/families/caregivers, and the interdisciplinary team, to prepare service plans and determine and recommend services required, including other community agencies, services, and funding support.
  • Create meeting agendas for clinical meetings with TDSB staff.
  • Participate and/or lead classroom and team meetings, intake meetings, case conferences, and community tables and meetings as required, as well as engage in community outreach to develop a collaborative approach to service delivery.
  • Support and guide TDSB staff and internal/external service providers in the implementation of students' Support Plans, and liaise with TDSB ECPP administrators, to provide updates and troubleshoot requests and emergent issues.
  • Promote the unique delivery of the classroom to create awareness and encourage/support other community programs to incorporate needsbased services and landbased education via community presentations, trainings, conferences, and meetings.
  • Develop and oversee processes and standard operating procedures, including staff orientation and training procedures.
  • Assist in the development of clinical procedures and guidelines, and the implementation of evidencebased practice.
  • Assist with program planning, development, evaluation, research, and outcome measurement.
  • Support team members to develop and enhance their clinical, cultural and administrative skills.

Qualifications:


  • Master's degree in social work or Bachelor's degree with equivalent relevant experience working with Indigenous communities and a deep understanding of the cultural contexts and challenges.
  • 3 years of related experience working with adolescents and young adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and other complex overlapping diagnoses.
