SUMMARY

OF

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Photography major focuses on developing critically engaged and contextually aware photographic work. Situated within the Audain Faculty of Art, the Photography program at Emily Carr University fosters the development of student practice within the context of contemporary art discourse, with a strong technical and conceptual foundation, and a keen awareness of the relationship between photography and a range of disciplines and practices.
    Required Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MFA degree or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience;
- intercultural competence;
- strong communication and facilitation skills
- strong evidence of excellence in photographic practice;
- expertise in a range of traditional and contemporary methods of making such as traditional analogue photography including medium and large format and darkroom processes, advanced digital imaging and post-production, new and emerging technologies in photography, studio photography and lighting;
- significant evidence of active engagement with discourse within contemporary photographic practices, histories and theories of photography, and more broadly in contemporary art discourse;
- knowledge of traditional, emergent and experimental photo-based practices, and the ability to integrate new tools, media and methods including new digital media and processes into the photography curriculum;
- strong evidence of excellence in photographic practice that may include photobooks, projected and moving imagery, the integration of new and expanded media, collaborative, public and installation practices, historical and experimental non-silver processes, ecological, sustainable approaches and methods;
- demonstrated engagement with photography in the broader field, such as the global contemporary art context, engagement with diverse Indigenous and cultural perspectives, and intersectional approaches to art-making and pedagogy;
- ability to advise photography students on a diverse range of professional (photographic) practice and related art economies (including commercial, gallery-based, collective, public, and socially engaged areas, etc.)."
