The Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction, including the development, implementation, monitoring, and compliance to policy, legislation, and standards, for addiction and mental health services, as well as proactive monitoring of substance use and mental health data to support system planning.


The Ministry works with service providers and community partners to design and enhance a coordinated community-based addiction and mental health care system, leveraging policy and practice innovations and research and evaluation to enable the best possible outcomes for Albertans.


The Ministry works closely with other cross-ministry partners, external organizations, other Canadian provinces, and the Government of Canada to plan addiction and mental health service delivery.

The Ministry also liaises with the Office of the Alberta Health Advocates and Alberta Health Services.

The Regulatory Compliance and Data Stewardship Branch
Provides rigorous, high-quality data, research, evaluation and analytics, as well as clear articulation and management of ministry performance measures.

The branch is also responsible for enforcing compliance to legislation (acts, regulations and standards) as approved by the Minister; investigating complaints and conducting inspections/follow-ups on reported incidents to ensure service providers meet legislative requirements; and licensing service providers who provide mental health and addiction services that focus on improving the mental health and well-being of an individual.

Strategic Information, Research and Evaluation Unit
Develops the Ministry's performance measurement strategy, fostering evidence-driven decisions. The unit utilizes its analytical capabilities to communicate its vision for analytics, ensure data integrity, and drive cross-jurisdictional collaboration. With a focus on data management and business architecture, the unit oversees the implementation of comprehensive frameworks.

Using innovative tools to develop publicly-reported measures, and lead impactful research and evaluation efforts, the unit contributes to informed decision-making and improved information access for the Ministry's goals.

We have a Director role which will be reporting to the Executive Director, Regulatory Compliance and Data Stewardship in the Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction's System Overview and Strategic Services Division.
