Position:
HCC Outreach Worker Positions


Position: 35 hours per week.


Working Days:
Saturday and Sunday.


Hours:7:00 am to 3:00 pm.


Wage:
$25.00 per hour


Location:
Purpose Society, 40 Begbie Street, New Westminster.


The Purpose Society provides mobile harm reduction and supportive social services in New Westminster during the morning and early afternoon hours that the Health Contact Centre (Safe Consumption Site) is not open.

Services focus on supporting people who are at risk of opioid overdose or who use other substances, answer calls to pick up sharps, administer naloxone as needed and make referrals.


The HCC Outreach worker will be supervised by the HCC Site Co-Ordinator and, in the event of an emergency, the Executive Director.


Duties:


The primary duties of the Outreach Worker are to drive a vehicle and find people who are using drugs outside, inform them of and invite them to the HCC.

Support people who are at risk of opioid overdose or who use other substances, ensure they are safe, distribute harm reduction supplies, answer calls to pick up sharps, administer naloxone as needed and make referrals.


  • Work closely with the HCC Site-Coordinator to implement opioid overdose prevention and response strategies, especially involving mobile outreach services
  • Work to support and engage our network of Peer Workers in the community
  • Upon request, provide naloxone kits, safer injection/smoking supplies, condoms and other personal care items
  • Provide education and facilitate trainings on safer substance use and other harm reduction practices
  • Safely recover used syringes
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with clients who access services
  • Maintain necessary client and program reports and statistics, ensure that all required documentation is accurate
  • Provide resources and referral information to services such as violence prevention organizations, shelter and housing, substance use services and health care
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Twoyear diploma in a relevant field, such as social work, community health, mental health and addictions studies or equivalent. Extensive experience may be considered in lieu of formal training
  • Ability to maintain a nonjudgmental and nonstigmatizing approach is required
  • Ability to function effectively in difficult and/or crisis situations is required
  • Strong communication skills are required
  • Strong understanding of harm reduction principles, STDs, substance misuse, mental health and social determinants of health
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team is required
  • Established ability to maintain healthy boundaries is necessary
  • Knowledge of local resources as an asset
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver's license, the skill required to drive Ford SUV.
  • Clean driver's abstract and clear criminal records check
