The City of Penticton's Public Works Department is in search of a highly skilled and energetic individual for the position of Utilities Serviceperson.

The Public Works department keeps our community safe by providing clean, safe, drinking water, a reliable sanitary sewer system, and storm-water drainage to help prevent flooding.

This department manages the roads in our community, as well as the parks and cemetery, and collects your garbage and recycling.


To help support these services, as well as those delivered by other departments, the Public Works department also manages the City's fleet of vehicles.


Reporting to the Public Works Utilities Supervisor, the Utilities Serviceperson performs maintenance and repair tasks involving domestic, agricultural and effluent water distribution, sanitary sewers and storm sewer systems.

The Utilities Service Person works independently, with internal staff and contractors in a field environment.


Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, adjust, read, inspect and test water meters and ERT's.
  • Water turn on/offs at residential, commercial and industrial properties as required.
  • Locate Utility infrastructure as required for internal and external customers.
  • Maintain Utility records in written and digital format.
  • Operation, maintenance and repair of fire hydrants, pumps, pressurereducing valves and related equipment.
  • Assist in the operation, maintenance and repair of Agricultural/Domestic/Effluent Distribution systems.
  • Assist in the operation, maintenance and repair of Sanitary Sewer Systems including CCTV inspection, service cleaning and repair.
  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of reservoirs and dams.

Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • Knowledge of municipal safety procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and pipefitting practices and tools.
  • Knowledge of Utility locating equipment and metal detectors.
  • Operating knowledge of fire hydrants, pumps, water meters, pressurereducing valves and related equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labour in various weather conditions.

Education, Training & Experience:


  • Completion of Senior Secondary School or equivalent.
  • Water Distribution Level 1 certification through Environmental Operators Certification Program(EOCP).
  • Valid Class 5 Driver License with Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Courses or certificates in WHMIS, TDG, First Aid, Fall Arrest, Confined Space Entry, and Utility locates.
