A Day in the Life


As the HR Generalist, you will report directly to the Executive Director and will be responsible for leading day-to-day HR functions with the provision of advice and counsel to management and directors on administration, labour relations, and workforce matters.

This role manages all aspects of operational HR including recruitment, onboarding and staff engagement.

The HR Generalist will also participate in union negotiations and grievance resolution discussions and processes, including researching and preparing related correspondence and initiating/responding to related communication with union representatives.

Here's what you can expect to dig into in this exciting, hands-on role:

  • Work closely with Executive Leadership, acting as a professional advisor in implementing their strategic vision and providing recommendations.
  • Work with the Executive Director to establish a teamfocused environment through open communication and positive relationships with colleagues.
  • Sourcing and executing manager and employee training.
  • Establishing HR framework and best practices including systems and processes to support administrative initiatives.
  • Oversee and lead the onboarding and orientation process for new hires.
  • Facilitate employee offboarding including conducting exit interviews and providing management with analysis and recommendations.
  • Support all things people operations including addressing employee performance issues, facilitating conflict resolution, and/or resolving any employeerelated issues should they arise.
  • Promote positive union/management relations through communication and meetings with managers.
  • Assist leadership with the interpretation of Collective Agreements representing UFCW 1518 employees and grievance handling including:
  • Conducting Investigations and fact-finding
  • Drafting responses to grievances
  • Researching arbitral jurisprudence
  • Preparing and presenting cases for thirdparty hearings.
  • Advising UFCW 1518 leadership as needed on additional union business.
  • Provide interpretation and advice on legal statutes, union policies, and BC employment standards.
  • Communicate staff celebrations & updates (anniversaries, tributes, new hires, etc.) and liaise with the Admin team to plan staff retirement or celebration events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Your Qualifications

  • 57 years of demonstrated work experience in Human Resources and/or Labour Relations roles or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Previous work experience in a HR Generalist role in government, union, nonprofit, or similar operation is required.
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent in Human Resources and/or Industrial/Labor Relations is preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of how to manage stakeholder relations and openly communicate with partners.
