The City of Port Coquitlam's Recreation Department is committed to providing accessible and inclusive services, programs and opportunities for all members of our community.

We are looking for an experienced professional for the role of Recreation Program Assistant - Access & Inclusion who will act as a key member of the department leadership team in further developing and promoting a welcoming and inclusive recreation environment.

The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting with the development, execution and evaluation of access and inclusion programs and services.

Supervision including guidance and mentoring of staff and volunteers is required.

This position requires weekend and evening work actively supervising access & inclusion programming and services along with general facility supervision.


Some of the key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Assists in planning, developing, organizing, implementing and administering the operation and promotion of services and programs
  • Participates in recruitment, training, development, scheduling and supervision of staff
  • Respondes to community needs and opportunities while maintaining calm, confidence and compassion
  • Through an access and inclusion lens, provides exceptional service to both internal and external customers
  • Assumes responsibility for the operation and security for a recreation facility on assigned shifts in the absence of a supervisor
  • Drafts a variety of reports and maintains records related to the work
  • Completion of 6 postsecondary courses in Therapeutic Recreation or related Community Services discipline, three of which are directly related to working with individuals with a disability or inclusive and accessible programming or services
  • Six months supervisory experience
  • Excellent communication skills including navigating sensitive conversations with empathy and an understanding of City and community programs and services
  • A strong ability to build relationships with a variety of individuals, including parents/caregivers and customers, community partners and staff
  • Creative problemsolving and advocacy capabilities
  • The following certificates including: BCRPA High Five Training, Standard First Aid, and a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License
