Reporting to the Employee Relations Manager, the Employee Relations Associate Consultant provides timely, professional advice to managers on a wide range of labour relations matters while maintaining a focus on the mission, vision and values of the organization.

The Employee Relations Associate Consultant provides diversified and confidential functions, in support of the strategic labour relations initiatives and daily labour relations functions of the department.

Working closely with the managers of the defined portfolio the Employee Relations Associate Consultant coordinates meetings, maintains documentation, conducts research, and leads grievance, investigation and attendance activities In addition, the Employee Relations Associate Consultant researches current labour relations and relevant health care issues and trends and delivers advice to the management team.


Skills and Qualifications Required:


  • Postsecondary Bachelor's Degree required. Human Resources or Labour Relations focus preferred
  • Enrolled in a Master's Degree Level Industrial Relations Program OR completion of Labour Relations University Certificate preferred
  • 2 years' human resources experience in a unionized environment with a minimum of 1 year in a Labour Relations related position

Position Responsibilities:


  • Manages complaint/grievance process including providing professional advice to managers through formal complaint stages; leading grievance meetings; conducting related case law research, and; negotiating and drafting settlements
  • Leads investigations into employee misconduct including clarifying allegations by developing and conducting interviews of complainant, respondent and witnesses; reaching finding(s), and; advising management on response / course of action to ensure appropriateness, defensibility and consistency with organizational priorities and values
  • Conducts human resource impact and labour relations risk assessments of restructuring proposals, collecting relevant information, analyzing information to develop outline of options and impacts, and presenting analysis, risks and options to management
  • Manages termination and layoff proceedings including preparing and providing disclosure information in accordance with collective agreement;; preparing employee documentation; coordinating and conducting employee notification meetings; tracking employee elections and outcomes, and; managing process timelines
  • Leads the administration of the attendance management framework in cases where significant attendance problems exist including determining parties required at each stage of the process to contribute to the development of individual case management strategies, and; leading attendance related meetings or investigations
  • Researches, creates and maintains databases to track current labour relations and relevant health care issues/trends. Analyzes findings and prepares briefings to present to the Employee Relations team
