The Position
The Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for managing and strategically enhancing the organization's safety program.

This position plays a critical role in building, supporting and enhancing the safety culture within the organization through the development and maintenance of a variety of programs, policies and procedures, conducting investigations and providing the appropriate training and assessments to staff and the organization while maintaining all WSIB claims and case management.


  • Overall Health and Safety Program and Policy Development & Implementation
  • Develop and implement health and safety policies and procedures for the organization and recommend corrective/preventative measures to reduce safety risk. You must be able to advise on changing legislation, flag what is "missing" and draft policy.
  • Maintain compliance with health and safety legislative requirements, as well as established health and safety policies and procedures
  • Develop and implement a health and safety training program, fostering the safety culture within the organization
  • Respond to health and safety inquiries from employees and managers
  • Liaise, when required, with external government agencies (Ministry of Labour, WSIB) and provide required reporting
  • Health and Safety Related Training, Assessments & Investigations
  • Respond to and investigate critical incidents
  • Attend Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings and ensure all JHSC committee members are trained, providing further training as required
  • Provide Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems (WHMIS) training
  • Conduct or arrange for air quality and other safetyrelated environmental testing
  • Lead and/or coordinate health and safety training for managers/supervisors including training on managing the injured worker, accident investigation, critical injuries and roles and responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other health and safetyrelated legislation.
  • Educate staff on accident and injury prevention
  • Participate in new hire orientation as it relates to health and safety
  • Take an active role in managing/liaising with health and safety representatives at satellite offices
  • Coordinate the completion of workplace inspections and evacuation drills
  • Investigate accidents, injuries and hazards, coordinating with JHSC
  • Assist management in conducting risk assessments
  • Conduct Ergonomic Assessments
  • WSIB Claims and Case Management
  • Develop/maintain WSIB case management
  • Work in concert with Occupational Health to facilitate early and successful return to work, developing timelimited, goaloriented, transitional modified work plans in collaboration with unit managers, the employee and their bargaining representative
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to develop, implement and monitor permanent accommodation
  • Compile accident and incident
