    Description

    Registered Veterinary Technologist, RVT

    Department: Diagnostic Imaging

    Location: Calgary, AB

    Calgary Animal Referral & Emergency Center has an exciting opportunity for a Registered Veterinary Technologist, Diagnostic imaging (RVT) to join our dedicated and dynamic pet healthcare team. The CARE Centre is a 24-hour emergency and referral specialty hospital. We are committed to supporting pet owners and the veterinary community by providing the highest level of emergency and referral care.

    This role will enlist you as a member of the Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology team wherein the individual will report to the radiologist, the radiology clinical associate, Specialty technologist team lead and the General/Assistant Manager. The initial emphasis for this role will be on the outpatient ultrasound service (OPUS). The OPUS provides a means for general practitioners to access advanced imaging in the form of ultrasound and (less commonly) CT and radiography. Patients to the OPUS are admitted Monday-Wednesday mornings for assessment by the radiology clinical associate.

    The primary role of the technologist is to provide care to patients throughout their day-long stay at the hospital while undergoing imaging. This includes placement of intravenous catheters; completion of lab work as needed; administration of medications and provision of other care as required; monitoring patient sedation during ultrasounds and, ideally, managing general anesthesia for CT scans; performing radiographs as required; and recovering patients. Cross-training on the acquisition of CT scans will occur concurrently with the OPUS (see below).

    As training progresses, the technologist will transition from primarily affiliating with the OPUS to primarily acquiring CT scans for the hospital. CT acquisition is complex and requires attention to detail, dynamism, and the ability to work independently. Appropriate patient positioning, understanding of anatomy, and understanding of CT acquisition parameters are all required to produce a diagnostic study. Proficiency in these regards is ultimately expected of the technologist in this role so that CT scans can be acquired efficiently and effectively without the need for constant supervision. This will be accomplished primarily through on-site training, although self-directed perusal of topical resources is encouraged to supplement the technologist's knowledge and comfort with CT. There is also the opportunity for expansion into radiography contingent on hospital logistics and the technologist's level of interest and self-direction.

    The technologist will be responsible for:

    • Providing safe, quality care and services to our patients;
    • Upholding all policies and procedures of the department and the organization;
    • Maintaining the safe operation of equipment;
    • Participating in quality and safety initiatives; and (e) ensuring radiation safety measures and protection devices are used in accordance and in compliance with government regulations to ensure the safety of patients and staff

    Schedule: This role involves operating Monday-Thursday. Some after-hours may be needed.

    Education and Experience:

    • Must be a registered veterinary technologist (i.e. graduated from an accredited college technology program, successfully completed the Veterinary Technician National Examination, and registered with the ABVMA
    • Ideally accrued a minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience
    • Demonstrated ability to stay current within the profession, particularly through continuing education

    Skills And Abilities:

    • Positive attitude, collegiality, and enthusiasm for the work they undertake
    • Superior interpersonal and communication skills
    • Strong work ethic, organizational skills, and multi-tasking abilities
    • Critical thinking skills, ability to work independently, and desire to keep busy
    • Effective team building skills and the desire to learn and collaborate within a team environment
    • Demonstrates values of compassion, trust, and meaning in the workplace
    • Adheres to all privacy and confidentiality policies and procedures as they relate to our patients and our employees
    • Undertakes other related duties as assigned
    • Ultimately operates or oversees operation of radiologic medical imaging equipment to produce high quality diagnostic images

    Our team members are passionate about pets and their people. The ideal candidate will be energetic, self-motivated, outgoing, and possess strong organizational skills. The CARE Centre is a fast-paced environment so the ability to multi-task is essential. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary to thrive in our highly team-based environment as well as to provide the exceptional client experience the CARE Centre is known to offer. An interest in continual learning is supported with a continuing education allowance.
