About the Role


They will work alongside the Assistant Payroll Manager who leads a team of administrators and coordinators that manage SNDL's overall payroll function, as well as the Business Analyst who supports the overall back-office function of Workday.

Additionally, this role supports the Assistant Payroll Manager with the final processing and approval of bi-weekly payroll using SNDL'S payroll systems, Workday, ADP Workforce Now & Pay Works.

Role and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with projects as they relate to the company's payroll integration activities, including the roll out of new employee programs and policies, and planning / preparation activities.
  • Participate in 'end to end' testing in Workday as it relates to upcoming and ongoing integration activities.
  • Partners with the Business Analyst and Payroll Coordinators to investigate, collaborate, and test solutions to issues as required.
  • Works with the Business Analyst and Payroll Coordinators to plan, organize, test, validate and implement system newly released enhancements or fixes.
  • Participate in technology upgrades and projects as it relates to payroll.
  • Regular review and analysis of business processes to ensure best practices and are applied as it relates to Workday and overall payroll administration.
  • Work with the Payroll team to improve manual or inefficient processes.
  • Ensures all system processing for payroll calculations, retro's, deduction arrears, GL postings are efficient and accurate.
  • Prepare various reports for review and analysis related the pre and post payroll processing activities as required.
  • Support the Assistant Payroll Manager in the final preparation and processing of all aspects of a full cycle biweekly and semimonthly payroll for 2,500+ employees in multiple provinces.
  • Review that offcycle payments and payroll adjustments are completed accurately.
  • Participate in audits and prepare samples for review by internal and external auditors.
  • Assist in the reconciliation and preparation of yearend reporting for auditors and various government agencies (T4's, PIER).
  • Ensures adequate controls exist and are followed in the areas of responsibility.
  • Build and edit Payroll materials which may include templates, tools, training resources with the intent to improve overall efficiency, effectiveness, and user experience.
  • Support the payroll function by ensuring timely and accurate preparation of all payrolls and appropriate checks / balances and reporting are completed in accordance with timelines and procedures such as SOX.
  • Regularly maintain and review the integrity, reliability, and timeliness of payroll system changes and related information that has been input by the HR Administrators and Payroll Coordinators, ensuring compliance.
  • Participate in business continuity and operational planning activities.
  • Comply with proper administration, storage, and safe keeping of records. Must understand privacy and security restrictions associated with these documents.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge of Payroll by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional associations.
Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years full cycle payroll experience is an asset.
  • Experience working with Workday is required.
  • Experience working with ADP Workforce Now is preferred.
  • Have a strong understanding of relevant employment legislation and laws (in most Canadian provinces currently BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, NS and NB).
  • Broad knowledge tax legislation, Record of Employment (ROE) legislation and Workers Compensation guidelines in all provinces.
  • Experience in retail and/or a manufacturing facility strongly desired, particularly in the liquor and/or cannabis industry.
  • Experience in mergers and acquisitions an asset, as SNDL is continuing to grow.
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills required
  • Experience with large payroll workforce of 2,500+ employees.
  • Must be able to pass a basic security clearance.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
