Communications Assistant
Full Time, Term for 2-Years


Role Summary


It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to broadly provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country.

With over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development, and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services, TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population.


Working under the direction of the Manager, Communications, the Communications Coordinator supports the communications activities of TI and its programs.

The incumbent executes communications strategies and supervises brand management, social media and development of business and marketing materials.

These serve to create and maintain a central hub of information to engage the Inuit community, staff and other stakeholders in TI's programs, services, and activities.


Responsibilities

  • Create content for social media, print, web, brochures, newsletters, business cards,
  • Manage and monitor TI social media pages and online presence, including social media audits.
  • Execute communication plans and comprehensive social media strategies to support TI's.
programs and strategic goals

  • Recommended techniques to improve TI's public image.
  • Organize and direct promotional events.
  • Ability to capture and edit digital photos, video, and audio.
  • Work to bring awareness of the supports, services, and other resources available to Inuit from all levels of government.
  • Ensure a consistent, positive public image for TI.
  • Ensure all promotional and marketing materials are up to date and match brand identity strategy.
  • Identify and resolve issues with content in a timely manner.
  • Carry out an internal communications strategy to keep TI employees up to date on news relevant to the workplace.
  • Coordinate and update Manager, Communications on effectiveness and strategic plans.
  • Follow TI's policies and procedures.
  • Attend training and learning opportunities.
  • Other duties may be assigned and related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Inuit culture, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and traditional practices

Fluency in English, written and oral required; Inuktitut language skills are preferred

Superior oral and written communications skills; tactful, diplomatic, and professional communication style is essential.

Bring a creative, innovative, and fun approach to the work.

Excellent attention to detail, research, proofreading and editing skills.

Well organized; motivated and able to work independently in a deadline-driven environment.

Working knowledge of WordPress or other website software programs

A valid driver's license and owning a reliable vehicle are considered definite assets.

Incumbents who do not possess a valid Ontario drivers' license must be willing to undergo the required training to obtain one in a reasonable timeframe.


Education and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a communications / marketing role
  • Proven track record in social media management
  • Experienced with graphic design and related software.
  • Experience working in the notforprofit sector is preferred.
  • Experience working in an Inuit organization and/or with Inuit communities is preferred.
  • Highly driven and resultsoriented
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent customer service required.
  • Excellent writing skills with an emphasis on writing for the web and social media
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines on time and strong attention to detail.
  • Graphic design skills and experience with Adobe Creative Suite required.
  • The ability to speak and translate Inuktitut is a significant asset.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work effectively in remote working conditions.
  • Comfortable office environment
  • Work travel between TI's locations and other locales within Ottawa.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Excellent interpersonal and team building skills, communication and presentation skills, mediation and negotiation skills, conflict resolution skills, problem-solving, decision making and time management skills, strong project management skills, research and analysis skills, adept with MS-Office.

The ability to work effectively with all personality types; to prepare proposals, briefings, notes, proposals, and reports; and to function effectively in a cross cultural, high pressure, and high stress environment are all requirements of the position.
