Position Overview
This person reports to the Associate Director, HBI Molecular Core Facility.

This position is comprised of technical and clerical functions related to many aspects within the lab. The primary purpose of this position is to maintain and assist with general duties within the laboratory.

This is a recurring part-time position. Recurring part-time employees are hourly employee engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Taking responsibility for processing and analyzing of fee for service mouse genotyping samples in behalf of over 20 different research groups
  • Maintaining inventory and order fresh supplies as needed using eProcurement or purchasing card
  • Reconciling purchasing card transactions
  • Preparing common laboratory media or buffers (i.e. PBS, LB media, agar plates)
  • Preparation of the laboratory for monthly floor cleaning
  • Generate and maintain laboratory inventories for glycerol stocks, primers and constructs
  • Participate in periodic lab cleaning and reorganizations, especially freezers and refrigerators
  • Deliver laboratory glassware to central washing facility, retrieve and reshelve
  • Maintain optimum level of liquid nitrogen in lab storage facilities
  • Responsible for generating high quality and accurate genotyping data
  • Assist other lab personnel (technical and trainees) when required
  • Keeps inventory uptodate and stocked
  • Prepares solutions
  • Lab Chores like biohazard waste disposal
  • Generate and organized laboratory environment, with wellstocked common supplies, timely and correct ordering of consumables / equipment, wellkept and current records
  • Keep lab and work area clean and safe

Qualifications / Requirements:


  • Related Postsecondary education required
  • Minimum 12 years of Lab experience required
  • Laboratory experience with pipetting and PCR is required
  • Experience with capillary electrophoresis systems is strongly desired
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and Internet skills
  • Ability to manage time and projects well
  • Knowledge of UofC processes and procedures is desirable
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • WHIMS Certification
