Nature and Scope
The Program Assistant - Summer Student focuses on support for the Trades & Industrial department.

General Accountability


The Program Assistant will have the opportunity to gain excellent experience while developing the skills necessary to be successful in their future.

The summer student will have an opportunity to improve their teamwork and communication skills, as well as, their administrative skills and leadership capabilities.

The incumbent will provide program support by assisting Program Coordinators with program preparation and organization, as well as perform administrative functions within the T&I department.

This position provides additional support as required and includes the following broad range of accountabilities:

Specific Accountabilities

  • Provide professional administrative assistance to your direct supervisor and to employees in the department to support the accomplishment of business activities
  • Assist in maintaining the filing systems of the department
  • Carry out quality control of data entry as required
  • Receive, sort, and send mail, courier packages, and other deliveries
  • Handle and process documents with confidentiality and compliance while exercising best practice with administrative procedures
  • Assist with records management, records destruction and file maintenance physical and electronic as well as the retention and destruction of documents
  • Provide administrative support to the department including photocopying, faxing, filing documents and reports and maintaining files
  • Provide administrative support and backup coverage in the office during periods of high workload and absences
  • Assist in ensuring classroom and program resources are in place, in addition to assisting with the set up and take down of classrooms as required
  • Assist with the organization of travel arrangements, course or conference registrations for the department
  • Assist in data collection and collating of information or documents
  • Assist with special projects and other department initiatives as requested

There may be some summer student positions that must meet the following criteria:

  • First Nations and Inuit secondary and post-secondary students aged 15 to 30 inclusive
  • Ordinarily resident on reserve or in recognized communities or on community lands
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Registered as fulltime students during the preceding academic year and who intend to return to school on a fulltime basis in the next academic year

Position requirements:
Ability to perform physical activities and lifting up to 50 pounds. A valid driver's licence is required as there is potential for travel to other SIIT locations across Saskatchewan. Knowledge of First Nations culture and traditions is considered an asset. Experience with Microsoft Office programs is required.
