    Job Summary


Located in Vancouver's Downtown East Side, the Main Street supportive housing program situated at 162 Main Street consists of 68 units of self-contained apartments for individuals exiting homelessness, many of whom have experienced a history of trauma, substance use, and/or mental health challenges.

The Mental Health Activity Worker develops, implements, evaluates, and participates in activities to meet clients' cultural, life skills, recreational and social needs.

Assists clients with activities of daily living as required, works independently and as part of a larger team to deliver cultural, social, recreational, vocational, and volunteer programs as well as the delivery of the support and advocacy services.

The Main Street Program will be home to approximately 50% Indigenous-identifying residents and 25% individuals who identify as 2SLGTBQ+. Lived experience, or knowledge of, Indigenous peoples and/or 2SLGTBQ+ communities is an asset. Preference will be given to individuals of Indigenous identity/ancestry.


Functions & Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and participates in activation, life skills, recreational, vocational, and/or social activities designed to meet the needs of clients, providing demonstrations as required. Adapts and modifies established activities to meet the special needs of members.
  • Promotes client participation in activities, and provides feedback regarding the performance and progress of clients. Facilitates group outings.
  • Assists in case planning with clients. Identifies and assesses potential emergency situations, and develops short-term strategies to deal with such situations including de-escalating challenging behaviours.
  • Advocates for clients by problem solving in areas such as financial assistance, accessing community resources, and obtaining volunteer or work placements.
  • Provides supportive feedback, demonstrations, modeling, and behavior management to clients, to assist with the development of physical, social, emotional, and life skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Provides meal programs or support in accordance with established policy.
  • Identifies available social, economic, recreational, and educational services and resources in the community that will meet clients' needs. Provides clients with related information.
  • Ensures the maintenance, cleanliness, and safety of programs and residence by completing janitorial and maintenance tasks as directed.
  • Meets with other service providers to assess activity and/or client objectives.
  • Refers clients to other programs/services, and provides information regarding available resources.
  • Completes and maintains related records and documentation such as statistics, progress reports, activity plans, and client activity profiles.
  • Assists in the preparation of the program budget, monitors expenditures, and assists with required financial documentation as directed.
  • Receives client feedback regarding activities and reports to Program Coordinator/Program Manager and responds as required.
  • Works with members, peers, supervisors, and other agencies and professionals in the community in a cooperative and professional manner.
  • May be asked to supervise students and volunteers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education, Training & Experience

  • Diploma in Community Social Service or Mental Health, or Recreation Service Delivery
And recent related experience of two (2) years,
Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience or other qualifications determined to be reasonable and relevant to the level of work

  • Working knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation approaches and services including individual service plan development and implementation and life skills training
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practices and Housing First philosophy
  • A solid background and knowledge of concurrent disorders with related work experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and understanding of Indigenous Peoples and cultures.
