Description

Under the general supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor - NEWPCC, SEWPCC, WEWPCC or designate, the Skilled Labourer performs various manual duties in the maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.


As the _Skilled Labourer_
_ _you will**:

  • Perform housekeeping, maintenance and care of all buildings and equipment.
  • Assist Plant Operators in the performance of miscellaneous duties, as required/assigned.
  • Perform outside maintenance such as snow removal from steps and doorways.
  • Pick up and deliver various materials, as required/assigned.
  • Operate various types of tools and equipment, such as power tools, hand tools, skid steer, scissor lift etc. as may be required to perform the duties assigned.
  • Clean in a safe manner, the following: grit tanks, sedimentation tanks, aeration tanks, final settling tanks, boilers and or digesters, and other tanks for inspection by others.
  • Perform general painting duties throughout the facility to prevent corrosion and to protect and maintain equipment and piping.
  • Practice established safety rules and regulations for the protection of self, fellow employees, the public and equipment operated.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the classification, as required and assigned.

Your education and qualifications include:


  • Grade 10, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of tools and/or machinery to perform general maintenance/repair work.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
  • Working knowledge of Department facilities operation and structure.
  • Working knowledge of a variety of materials, products utilized by the Department.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that is applicable to the area of work. (i.e. Confined entry, hazardous conditions, etc.).
  • Must have or be willing to obtain Red Cross/St. John's Ambulance First Aid/CPR training within 6 months of the appointment of this position.

Conditions of employment:


  • The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's Licence.
  • Must be physically capable of performing all of the duties of the position, but are not limited to: ability to lift 50 lbs., repetitive movement, crouching, kneeling, standing, climbing stairs, and continuous walking working outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions. May be required to work from scaffolds, ladders, in confined spaces and in hazardous locations.
  • Must successfully pass a respirator fit test and confined entry training.
