Job Summary

A Brief Overview

The Housing and Ancillary Services team manages 4,940 student beds in 18 residence buildings, as well as off-campus rental apartment and housing properties, three dining halls, numerous retail foodservice locations on campus, the Donald Gordon Hotel and Conference Centre, and Event Services.

Residence buildings also provide temporary accommodations for the summer conference, events and tourism markets. Revenue and services from these units support vital student life programs and contribute to the University's learning environment.


The Network Administrator is responsible for ensuring the integrity and efficient and secure operation of networks and servers for Housing & Ancillary Services.

As the department's system administrator, this position designs and develops new processes at all levels of complexity to manage the computer networking and server infrastructure.

This includes installation, upgrades, and changes, and liaising with clients from network integration to software implementation. The Network Administrator also employs, develops, and deploys various technological tools (e.g. virtualization technology) to optimize the efficiency of the network and server infrastructure.
This position determines resource requirements for network and security infrastructure, and plans, implements and maintains server and networking infrastructures. This position analyzes, acquires and installs new hardware, network appliances, software packages, operating systems, and upgrades. This position administers network and security products, and applies intrusion detection and vulnerability assessment techniques and technologies. This position recommends network and security policies, processes, and procedures. This position also directs, allocates, and supervises the work of other staff.


What you will do
Determines resource requirements for network and security infrastructure, and plans, implements and maintains server and networking infrastructures.

Analyzes, acquires and installs new hardware, network appliances, software packages, operating systems, and upgrades.
Provides expertise during outages or critical failures.
Administers network and security products, and applies intrusion detection and vulnerability assessment techniques and technologies.
Troubleshoots and implements solutions to a range of network issues.
Audits and evaluates systems and recommends upgrades and improvements.
Recommends network and security policies, processes, and procedures.

  • Directs, allocates, and supervises the work of other staff.
  • Other duties as required in support of the department and/or unit.

Required Education

  • Four-Year Bachelor Degree or equivalent. In addition, requires trade certification, qualification, or ongoing learning to remain ahead of changes in technology or emerging fields.

Required Experience

  • More than 3 years and up to and including 5 years of experience.
  • Experience in general IT infrastructure with a focus on installation, configuration, and maintenance of IT systems software and hardware considered an asset.
  • Experience with desktop and server operating systems considered an asset.
  • Experience with communication protocols, hardware, and real time operating system programming considered an asset (e.g., IP, TCP, POP3, etc.).

Required Licenses and Certifications Satisfactory Criminal Records Check required.

  • Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
