Main Purpose & Function
This position supports the delivery of projects under the Greenest City Action Plan and the Climate Emergency Action Plan.

The Planning Analyst is responsible for performing advanced research and assisting with policy development and implementation work and is a member of the Green and Resilient Buildings Team within the Sustainability Group.

The incumbent must have the ability to use independent judgment with mínimal supervision.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Compiles, updates, analyzes and identifies relevant trends in green building related data from reports, building data bases, and other sources;
  • Compiles, interprets and reports trends in public policy, academic research, and industry best practices in order to inform and support Sustainability policy development and implementation;
  • Researches processes and best practices using internet searches, literature reviews and interviews;
  • Carries out tasks and exercises decisionmaking related to certain daytoday activities for annual carbon reporting and limits regulations with mínimal supervision;
  • Assists supervisors in the design, planning and execution of larger Sustainability projects and initiatives;
  • Creation of productionready materials, including creation and delivery of presentations for senior management and other City staff;
  • Report writing including assistance with the preparation of Council Reports;
  • Responds to inquiries from other departments, the public, and external stakeholders;
  • Organizes and prepares materials for public awareness and engagement (writing letters, bulletins, newsletters, website updates as well as preparing mailing lists and presentation materials);
  • Organizes and facilitates meetings, workshops and other engagementrelated events;
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • University graduation in urban planning or a related field, such as architecture, building science, engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required
  • Experience in local government planning and building permitting

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends, and developments in the field of green and energy efficient buildings is required
  • Proficiency with data management and analysis tools and processes
  • Knowledge of basic research techniques and statistical analysis
  • Verbal and writing proficiency in additional languages preferred
  • Ability to conduct research, analysis and identify trends
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet prescribed deadlines and function as a team player
  • Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into accurate, concise, and engaging web content, power point presentations, reports, and public correspondence
  • Ability to exercise sound decisionmaking and judgment working with mínimal supervision is also essential
  • Ability to direct and supervise the work of subordinates when required
  • Experience working with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and city data systems such as POSSE and VanMap would be an asset
