General Accountability:


  • Reporting to the Manager
  • Structure Maintenance, this position is responsible for the development, planning, scheduling, inspection, management and coordination of asbestos abatement and removal programs. The incumbent is responsible for effectively managing assigned staff and resources, and ensuring asbestos is removed in accordance with the Ministry of Labour Regulations and TTC's Asbestos Abatement Standards/Procedures.

Key Job Functions:


  • Coordinating the removal of mold and asbestos insulation in a safe and cost effective manner from: subway tunnel walls, subway box structure tunnel walls, vent and fan shaft walls, subway platform lips, ceilings, shop locations, office buildings, carhouse garages, piping, ductwork, flooring and, electrical equipment etc.
  • Inspecting TTC facilities for possible asbestos insulation and determining the appropriate type of removal process
  • Coordinating weekend closures to accommodate focused Asbestos Abatement efforts in order to meet the needs of other Departments
  • Coordinating the proper and prompt cleanup of asbestos spills as directed by the Safety Department
  • Preparing objectives, work schedules, and cost estimates for each asbestos removal project
  • Coordinating work crews, tools, equipment and materials required for asbestos/mold removal
  • Analyzing and developing work methods, testing procedures, and pilot programs
  • Completing the annual TTC asbestos inspection
  • Maintaining and advising of updates to the TTC's Asbestos Management Manual
  • Supervising, Asbestos Abatement employees, contractors, and consultants
  • Holding regular progress meetings with asbestos abatement team members, Track & Structures staff and other TTC departments
  • Active participation in monthly Asbestos meetings with Safety and Environment and Asbestos Specialty Consultant
  • Updating Capital Program Project Status reports
  • Representing the Track & Structures Department on asbestos management issues
  • Ensuring adherence to the OSHA including all internal safety related practices and policies
  • Ensuring and enforcing compliance of work car safety and operating rules
  • Liaising with other management/supervisory personnel from throughout the TTC to ensure the proper
- coordination of joint projects/activities

  • Administering provisions of the applicable Collective Agreement
  • Ensuring controls and processes are in place for purchasing and contract administration
  • Participate in the TTC Customer Service Ambassador Program
  • Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (if applicable within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a serviceprovider and an employer
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience:


  • Completion of a postsecondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Several years of directly related experience in the asbestos abatement field.
  • A valid 253S Certificate issued after completion of the Asbestos Abatement Supervisor Training Program approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Additional Requirements:


  • Comprehensive knowledge of procedures and techniques applicable to the management, identification and removal of asbestos containing materials
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Ministry of Labour Regulations on Asbestos and other relevant government legislation/regulation (Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Code, etc.)
