Join Communication and Engagement's Media Relations Unit to help the City deliver a consistent, professional and focused corporate presence through social media and media platforms.


As a Communications Technician, you will support various media activities, including creating media monitoring reports, distributing media releases, supporting the City of Edmonton's corporate social media presence and helping with news conferences and spokesperson training.


You will work closely with colleagues on communications tasks to provide support in the implementation of media and social media components of communication plans.

A work day could include sharing the grand opening of a new park through Instagram stories, editing a media release on a Council initiative or discussing how to best tell a story of a new City attraction.

The Communications Technician is reliable, a quick learner and has an eye for detail.


The ability to achieve timely results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded workplace will be key to the success of this role.

  • Be responsible for the timely development and delivery of communications materials
  • Prepare a weekday media monitoring report before 8:00 AM, provide campaign monitoring/reporting, and contribute to monthly and annual news and social media reports
  • Prepare and distribute media content, including formatting, proofing, drafting in content management systems and archiving, with attention to detail to ensure errorfree products
  • Support the City's web and social media presence by uploading videos, posting content, monitoring social media channels and assisting in the development of social media responses
  • Provide assistance at events, press conferences and media availabilities
  • Assist in the administration and organization of media training for the City of Edmonton
  • Work with various online tools and databases that support the City's media relations activities
  • Develop, post and coordinate content for digital platforms/websites and tools

Qualifications:


  • Graduation from a 2 year college, accredited post secondary institute or technical institute program with coursework related to public relations, communications,marketing or journalism
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a position related to social media, public communications and/or media relations operations
  • Strong writing and proofreading skills and knowledge of Canadian Press Style
  • Experience with posting to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube and following social media best practices
  • Experience and knowledge of Google Suite and image editing software
  • Knowledge of public relations principles and techniques as well as current knowledge of civic operations and activities
  • Ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships and deliver a high standard of customer service
  • Competency in administrative skills such as data entry, contact lists and spreadsheets
  • Good organizational skills, ability to multitask and manage priorities
  • Proven ability to establish effective working relationships
  • Understanding of public administration and experience working in a large organization is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and serviceminded style

_ Up to 1 permanent full-time position_

Hours of Work:40 hours per week, Monday - Friday. The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
