Job Summary


This position is responsible to plan and oversee an average inventory level of ~$100M to support an annual capital plan of 400 locomotives and a maintenance program for 2400 locomotives, which result in ~18000 shopping events per year.

The long term and short term material plan under this responsibility will be working closely with the Sr.

Managers in Mechanical Planning and Procurement Supply Chain, strategizing on optimum material sourcing, material placement, setting ERP levels, establishing technological advancements in inventory forecasting and setting standards for required Bill of Material.

Responsibilities include keeping inventory within target levels in collaboration with the warehouses, establishing key business rules within SAP and working closely towards the SAP/S4 transformation also overseeing mobility enhancements for the warehouses.

With the S4 transformation, assist in building framework that saves $10-20M over a span of 10 years.


Coordinate Material Priority with the regional material planner while understanding the direction of material requirements from the long term material planner.


Be measured on important KPIs:

  • Inventory stockout scenarios
  • Number of placed in Locomotives held for materials (LHFM) status
  • Number of days lost due to LHFM instances
  • Material cost trending

Major Responsibilities:


  • Build and lead a team of analytically inclined, experienced material planners developing talent for subsequent planning and control roles. Team will be responsible to build material pipeline for running maintenance and capital overhaul and modification programs in tuned to Mechanical inventory metrics. Set roadmap with Regional Material Manager and internal shops to enhance ontime performance, reduce dwell, improve availability and reliability based on material planning and requirements. Liaison with vendors as needed in communication with Procurement and Supply Management.
  • Forecast, plan and organize the required scheduled maintenance inspection kits and drive consistency in Bill of Material (BOM) utilization for program work, running maintenance and schedule component changeout in line reliability work scopes.
  • Adjust inventory requirements and safety stock levels valued at $100M CAD to minimize stockout and LHFM (locomotive held for materials) scenarios to reduce locomotive in shop dwell and improve asset availabilities.
  • Collaborate on joint initiatives with Procurement and Supply Management and financial planning. Value of initiatives may range from ~$1 Million $25 Million. Centralize locomotive portfolio purchasing under Material Planning. Work with the IT group to continuously develop Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to reduce manual report generation and improve data accuracy and material followups. Facilitate mobility enhancements and migration to S4.

Skills / Functional Knowledge:


  • 10+ years experience in locomotive operation, material planning and management, and warehouse & inventory management procedures
  • Experience in parts logistics, 3rd party management, and talent management
  • Ability to collect and analyze data from multiple sources and platforms.
  • Strong communication, leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Excel and SAP Warehouse and Inventory Management platforms.
  • Continuous improvement mindset resulting in generating cost savings to achieve best value of each dollar spent.
  • Must be physically able to conduct shop visits and inspections.

Education / Certification / Experience**:


  • Bachelors' degree in statistics/management/commerce/supply chain/engineering is preferred.
  • Leadership experience in planning/control
  • Knowledge of CN's network as well as CN's Transportation and Mechanical departments
