Your opportunity:

This is a one year term position covering a materinity leave.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Settingup lab/workshop according to research and/or course schedules
  • Preparing, assembling and settingup material, equipment and supplies used in teaching and/or research labs
  • Troubleshooting issues with lab equipment and/or workstations
  • Ensuring the safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials while operating within close proximity to others
  • Serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures and equipment

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology or Microbiology or acceptable combination of equivalent experience and education.
  • Minimum two years of recent and relevant experience in providing technical and administrative support for Cell and Molecular Biology Teaching Labs, including Bioinformatics, PCR and electrophoresis, DNA extraction, Microscopy, plant transplantation and bacterial transformation
  • Experience in preparing and assembling solutions, materials, supplies and equipment used for Physiology and Cell and Molecular Biology Teaching Labs
  • Experience in employing a range of molecular techniques including: cloning, transformations, DNA/RNA extraction, ligation, PCR, plasmid preps, gel electrophoresis, yeast matings, plant seed sterilization, propagation and germination to run experiments
  • Experience in employing a range of physiological techniques including: measurement of physiological parameters (e.g. Cardiorespiratory, EMG, neurophysiology), bioassays (e.g. Daphnia heart rate assay, C. elegans chemotaxis), associated techniques (e.g. fluorescence microscopy, PCR and gel electrophoresis) and Drosophila development
  • Experience in preparing and aliquoting all the reagents and materials including PCR reagents, enzymes, DNA/RNA gels, stock solutions, bacterial plates, live organisms, etc.
  • Experience in maintaining live animal colonies and growing live cultures used in teaching labs including Daphnia Magna,Planarians, American Cockroaches, C. elegans, Arabidospsis Thaliana, saccharomyces cerevisiae, Drosophila etc.
  • Experience in operating and troubleshooting steam sterilizer machines (autoclaves)
  • Experience in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment including biosafety cabinet, pH meters, spectrometer, thermocycler, microscopes, pipettes, centrifuges, gelrunning devices, computers and ancillary equipment
  • Experience in maintaining departmental microscopesand other equipment and perform periodic functional tests including: pipettes, pH meter, spectrometer, gel electrophoresis devices, thermocycler, centrifuges and culturing equipment (incubator, cell culture hood), dissecting, compound, and fluorescent microscopes
  • Experience in maintaining and performing function checks on computers and data acquisition instrumentation used in neurophysiology, ECG and other Physiology lab exercises
  • Strong technical skills in all aspects mentioned above
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational ability, tact and diplomacy in dealing with others
  • Demonstrated problem solving skill with the ability to proactively recognize issues
  • Valid G driver's license required for picking up and delivering animals, plants, microorganisms and supplies
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends or holidays to suit the demands of teaching lab
