Our Western Canada Team is looking for a

Zero Waste Planner / Waste Reduction Specialist to join one of our fastest growing Canadian operations. This position is a phenomenal opportunity to be part of an established solid waste practice in western Canada with a bright future ahead.

We are seeking an outgoing person to join our solid waste management team who is passionate about working with regional waste commissions, large and small municipalities, organizations, as well as First Nation communities.

This position will support our clients in the
planning and implementation of zero waste and circular economy frameworks and strategies ,
solid waste management plan updates and reviews, design and implementation of recycling and compost systems , along with other waste diversion and reduction programs and initiatives, including aspects of
behavior change ,
public education, outreach and awareness .


Responsibilities:


  • Support in developing zero waste/circular economy strategies and frameworks
  • Support in developing Solid Waste Management Plan reviews and updates
  • Interpretation of waste characterization studies
  • Assist in planning and implementing waste, recycling, compost, and other waste reduction and diversion programs in collaboration with a team of engineers and community planners
  • Assist with designing public surveys, open houses, consultations and public engagement strategies
  • Coordinate information and education resources for zero waste programs across a wide geographical region. Develop and maintain partnerships with local environmental/sustainability focused organizations.
  • Prepare presentations and information packages
  • Provide ongoing communication and liaison with communities/clients and conduct site visits
  • Develop and deliver presentations to the public, including schools, community groups, organizations, and businesses
  • Maintain upto date knowledge of Alberta and BC Recycling Regulations and policy surrounding solid waste
  • Work with communities, Product Stewardship organizations and Regional Districts to implement and troubleshoot waste, recycling and composting systems
  • Assist with other waste management related projects as required, including writing of proposals.

Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree, Master's degree or diploma in planning, engineering, or environmental studies
  • 4+ years of work experience related to the position, preferably in a consulting practice
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • English written and verbal communication skills are essential to this position
  • Attention to detail along with strong organizational skills
  • Must be flexible with project types and responsibilities
  • Must be selfmotivated, organized, and hardworking
  • Ability to complete work under tight deadlines when required
  • Willing to travel for work during the week
  • Previous experience in zero waste, circular economy and solid waste, recycling, and organics planning
  • Understanding of behavioral change techniques in regard to solid waste would be an asset
  • Experience or aptitude with developing educational or engagement materials that are visually appealing and follow good design principals. Experience with software such as InDesign is a bonus.
  • Previous experience delivering presentations or educational programs and an understanding of environmental education techniques is an asset
  • Previous experience working with First Nations and rural communities would be an asset
  • Valid driver's license
