The General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada is currently hiring for a SATCOM specialist.

In this role you will be responsible to assist with day to day operations and maintenance of the Mercury Global Anchor Stations (MGAS) in Ontario, Nova Scotia and British Columbia, and Deployable Terminals.

When the individual is not traveling, the position follows a Hybrid working model with a mix of home and on-site work.


This opportunity would be ideal for someone passionate about troubleshooting and working with RF systems as wells as experience with commercial and/or military SATCOM networks.

Responsibilities:


  • Perform corrective/preventive/scheduled maintenance on MGAS locations and Network Management System (NMS) infrastructure;
  • Perform corrective/preventative maintenance on networking hardware;
  • Perform preventative/corrective maintenance to RF hardware such as LNAs, LNBs, up/down converters, antenna systems, Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPA), traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTA), modulators and switches, etc.
  • Responsible for operations and supporting maintenance of Power (diesel, UPS and distribution systems), HVAC and supervisory and control systems;
  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on complex antenna systems and subsystems;
  • Complete maintenance records, monthly reports, and support updates to inventory records;
  • Provide help desk or technical support to customer (as required);
  • Ensure all safety requirements for ongoing tasks are adhered to;
  • Recognizes the inadequacies or nonexistence of process and establishes them where necessary;
  • Leads the development and improvement of MGAS ISS procedures and process improvement based upon Lessons Learned;
  • Collects, analyzes and summarizes MGAS performance data, producing regular verbal and written reports;
  • Identify areas of additional ISS scope and opportunities for increasing GDMS-C business with respect to DND SATCOM;.

Basic Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Electronics/Telecommunications Technologist Diploma, or the equivalent;
  • 15 years experience in related field would be an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with RF systems, especially satellite based RF systems is an asset;
  • Experience with a variety of RF test equipment such as Spectrum & Network analyzers, signal generators, power meters and rad meters;
  • Knowledge of power distribution and HVAC systems is an asset;
  • Basic understanding of SATCOM theory, including Earth Station Design, RF theory, RF terminal design and optimization, Baseband equipment configuration and operation;
  • Familiarity with RF uplink and downlink components including high power amplifiers, upconvertors, downconvertors, supervisory and control systems, routers, switches.
  • Must react to diverse situations independently and accurately;
  • Supervision of contractors or customers working at the location is sometimes required;
  • Team orientation and team accountability
  • Experience with working at heights on boom lifts, extension and step ladders is an asset;
  • Must demonstrate flexibility and the ability for quick and knowledgeable response to technical and customer service related issues which arise while in the field.
This job includes physical/sensory requirements such as but not limited to:

  • Use of ladders and stairs;
  • Carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment of up to 50 lbs;
  • Kneeling, crouching, bending, squatting, reaching, and crawling to access equipment and components;
  • Working outdoors in different weather conditions;
  • Use of colour vision to identify electrical components.

Working Conditions:

  • Overtime and oncall on a routine basis with potential short notice dispatches to BC or NS locations;
  • A valid driver's license is required;
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Canadian Security Clearance and a positive Controlled Goods Assessment. Eligibility to work in Canada either as a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident;
