POSITION FUNCTION

Ensure the long-term sustainment of infrastructure, service delivery and programs and reduced corporate and community climate risk by incorporating climate adaptation considerations into public infrastructure, project planning and design, strategic decision-making, budgeting, and cost-benefit analysis.


KEY DUTIES

  • Assist in evaluating, analyzing, developing, and maintaining City guidelines, policies, and processes to integrate climate resilience measures for tangible risk reduction outcomes.
  • Lead in the development of corporate and community climate adaptation strategies, plans and programs through community and industry consultation.
  • Lead the development of corporate and community vulnerability and risk assessments of current and future climate impacts.
  • Coordinate with City departments to identify and track the City's costs related to climate change impacts.
  • Provide technical expertise and analysis of climate risk and the integration of climate resilience measures into the City's operations.
  • Develop tools and resources to improve the public's understanding of climate impacts and how individuals and organizations can become involved in advancing adaptation action.
  • Liaise with federal, provincial, and municipal officials and program managers, foundations and community organizations for information exchange, collaboration and strategic advice and direction.
  • Represent the department in various working groups and forums. Organize and facilitate meetings and workshops; liaise with the public/community stakeholders. Present to various internal and external groups, including the preparation and presentation of advice and reports for Council.
  • Direct and coordinate the work of contractors to provide climate adaptation support services to the city.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, document performance trends, and recommend modifications to improve resilience.
  • Perform related duties where required.

INDEPENDENCE

  • Work is reviewed through discussions with supervisor and department meetings.
  • New initiatives, major projects and policies are discussed with supervisor with recommendations.

  • Sound understanding of the regional context of climate change and projected impacts.
  • Understand how environmental issues integrate within the larger context of local government priorities and core services.
  • Working level knowledge of current word processing, spreadsheet, and related specialty software.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

  • University undergraduate degree in Sustainability, Engineering, Environmental Science or Studies, Public Administration, or related field (4 years).
  • Additional relevant training or certification an asset.

Experience:


  • 5 years relevant experience in climate change adaptation planning and response, emergency management and preparedness, environment, sustainability, or other relevant discipline.

OTHER:


  • May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
  • Experience in a local government or public institution setting is an asset.

Work schedule:
Monday - Friday, 35 hour work week


$51.42 per hour, Pay Grade 16 (Under Review)
