AFE MEDICAL CARE RESEARCH

CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA
The Safe Medical Care Research (SMC-R) department performs acquisition, abstraction, and capture of clinically oriented medical legal data. The department analyzes and interprets the data to generate knowledge that supports the activities of Safe Medical Care. The department also responds to internal and external requests for data analysis.

The department studies historical data to identify individual provider, team and system factors associated with medico-legal risk, researches trends, and evaluates the performance and impact of education programs.

The department synthesizes evidence and disseminates its research findings by authoring reports, risk management and educational materials in collaboration with CMPA's physician advisors, general counsel, and the Communications department.


POSITION OVERVIEW


The Statistician contributes to the CMPA's core mission of improving the safety of medical care by conducting data extraction, analysis and interpretation using CMPA's medico-legal data and other relevant and necessary data sources.

As a member of a multidisciplinary research team, the Statistician works closely with team members in creation of SMC-R knowledge products to proactively share CMPA data, disseminate research findings, and support education and learning activities of Safe Medical Care.


  • Strong analytical and programming skills and experience in using a relational database are essential in this role. Working knowledge in advanced multivariate statistical analysis such as data mining, generalized linear regression and multilevel modelling are required in leading or participating in key research projects. The Statistician is responsible for ensuring the data and the methodology are aligned with the research questions, the results are properly interpreted and clearly reported or presented to various audiences.
  • The incumbent must also possess strong organizational and project management skills to balance workload and priorities with particular attention to the completion of tasks on time. Strong communication skills including business writing and oral presentations are also required.

POSITION ACTIVITIES

  • Collaborates with members across SMC-R in research projects by participating in clarification or development of research questions, developing data extraction criteria and methodologies according to research objectives and data availability, conducting analysis, interpreting results and reporting.
  • Leads the development of knowledge products including Know Your Risk medicolegal data reports, manuscripts, or other research reports.
  • Interacts with internal and external stakeholders to present and explain research findings, and to promote understanding of CMPA data and research methods.
  • Contributes to ongoing quality assessment and quality assurance of medicolegal data and knowledge products of Safe Medical Care Research.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 6 years' relevant experience in conducting research projects including the design, execution, analysis, interpretation and reporting of findings.
  • Indepth knowledge and working experience in both descriptive and inferential statistics, data manipulation, data mining and statistical modelling.
  • Knowledge of administrative health care data.
  • Experience with DAD, NACRS and OHIP data a strong asset.
  • Experience in writing analytical reports.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong programming skills, particularly a statistical analysis package (preferably SAS), and familiarity with data visualization software.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent data extraction, manipulation, sampling and exploration skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a group setting or oneonone, to explain complex concepts clearly, and to instruct others in the use of new technology and/or processes.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills and ability to work in a high volume, busy, and deadline driven environment.
  • Ability to foster a positive, collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to exercise judgement and make decisions while working with mínimal supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to changes.

  • Salary range: $97,900 to $131,000 this role is classified as level
  • Location: Hybrid
  • Primary Remote Job. You can work from a homebased office the majority of time, with regular onsite presence at the CMPA office (up to 12 days per week). If you prefer to work in an office setting as your primary workspace, you can choose to work out of the CMPA's office located in Ottawa, Ontario near the beautiful Dow's Lake.
