Join the Facility and Facility Maintenance team as a Refrigeration Mechanic Use your troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve problems with air conditioning and refrigeration systems, HVAC equipment, Ice plants and large chillers.

You'll work independently in clean and safe facilities across the city. The steady, reliable hours provide an excellent "work life balance" working on a small but growing, tight knit team.

You'll maintain an inventory of tools and materials to ensure you have everything you need to do your work. Safety meetings and the proper use of PPE will be important parts of each day. You may interact with your supervisor, team members, City staff and contractors as part of your day. Your success will be measured by your ability to achieve results in a respectful, inclusive and service-minded way.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, overhauls and installations of central air conditioning, stand alone air conditioning, refrigerated ammonia or freon ice plants and other HVAC systems in City buildings and facilities
  • Participate in an on call rotation providing 24 hour emergency coverage
  • Check and install controls for air conditioning and refrigeration units
  • Install new air conditioning and refrigeration units
  • Change and alter existing refrigeration and air conditioning units
  • Replenish and maintain service vehicle stock as needed
  • Operate a service vehicle and maintain an inventory of tools and materials
  • Maintain detailed records of service and document work
  • Perform tasks in a safe manner, report health or safety concerns, and participate in regular safety meetings
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Certified Alberta Journeyman in the trade of Refrigeration Mechanic
  • Ammonia plant experience is an asset
  • Ability to drive a service vehicle on a daily basis to various locations across the city
  • Demonstrated ability to perform preventive maintenance, repairs, overhauls and installations of air conditioning and refrigeration units and working directly with ammonia and freon ice making equipment
  • Excellent customer service and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position including working in limited access spaces and working outdoors
  • Ability to read and understand drawings and blueprints
  • Ability to use testing equipment and a variety of hand and power tools to complete work tasks
  • Effective decision making skills along with the ability to troubleshoot and diagnose equipment failures
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, communicate, read and write English at a level needed to meet job related task and safety requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to use computerbased building management systems and work in a Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets)
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring (and being cleanshaven for SCBA use) is a requirement for this position
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and ability to obtain a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
