Forestry and Peatlands Branch within the department of Natural Resources and Northern Development is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Forester

  • Silviculture Specialist (Located in Winnipeg) and Forester
  • Operations Specialist (Located in Lac du Bonnet).

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent from another province.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime when required and work outoftown for extended periods of up to ten days with overnight accommodations in bunkhouses, hotels and tents.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to remote locations throughout the Province of Manitoba via truck, allterrain vehicle, boat, or rotary or fixed wing aircraft.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, which may require moderate physical effort (e.g. Carry equipment such as chainsaws and forestry samples for long distances potentially over rough terrain and in adverse weather conditions).

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Post secondary education in Forestry or related field of study. An equivalent combination of resource related education, training and experience in field forestry operations may be considered.
  • Experience planning, performing, supervising and inspecting silvicultural activities.
  • Experience planning, performing, supervising and inspecting timber harvest operations

(Note:


For Operations Specialist only):


  • Experience in human resource management including supervision, performance management and training.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with stakeholder groups and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Able to work independently with strong organizational skills to prioritize workloads and meet strict deadlines.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including ArcGIS and/or ArcGIS Pro, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) with strong mapping skills
  • Working knowledge of Forestry legislation and policy
  • Strong written communication skills.

Desired:

  • Experience preparing annual reports, operating plans, and forest management plans.
  • Experience preparing and managing budgets
  • Experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities

Forester - Silviculture Specialist:


The purpose of this position is to plan and implement provincial silvicultural and tree improvement programs as identified in Forestry and Peatlands Branch strategies.

The incumbent plans, schedules, supervises, administers and reports on all aspects of the programs, including the Provincial -Industrial co-operatives.

The incumbent works closely with external service providers to ensure that seedlings crops are sown, grown and delivered to end user locations in a fiscally and time responsive manner.
