The Adult Acute Services units of the Edmonton zone Addiction & Mental Health Programs are dynamic, patient and family centered inpatient units where all members of the team work within the collaborative care (CoACT) framework, according to the Addiction & Mental Health - Edmonton zone Principles of Care.

Reporting to the Unit Manager or designate, and under the direction and supervision of a staff nurse, the psychiatric/mental health aide performs activities that support meeting the personal care needs and comforts of patients:
in accordance with patient care plans and hospital policies and procedures.

This includes (but is not limited to) assisting in the provision of routine care to meet patient's hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs.

You will also assist in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients & families, staff and visitors. Off campus patient escort duties may be assigned.


Description:


As a Psychiatric Aide, you will perform activities within a multi-disciplinary team to meet the personal care needs and comforts of patients in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures.

Your duties will includes assisting with the provision of routine nursing care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs; assisting with organized activities or programs; as well as observing and reporting on a patient's mood, health, and wellbeing.

You will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).


Additional Required Qualifications:

Completion of Personal Care Aide or Mental Health Aide Certificate or equivalent. Two years' recent experience in Addictions and Mental Health. Non-violent crisis intervention training. Sound observation and strong verbal communication skills. Positive attitude and the ability to work effectively in an Acute Psychiatry setting. Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills. Ability to adapt quickly to changes in daily schedule and patient needs. Working knowledge of patient and family centered care principles.


Preferred Qualifications:

Working knowledge of the CoACT model of care. Working knowledge of trauma informed care. Health Care Aide Certificate and Mental Health First Aid Certificate.
