Department Information:


The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) works through wide-ranging partnerships and initiatives to deliver quality programs and services that promote and support economic development, diversification and prosperity in the interest of Northwest Territories residents - their businesses and communities.


Job Information:


The position is located in Yellowknife and reports to both the Assistant Deputy Minister, Economic Development (ADM-ED) and the Assistant Deputy Minister, Mineral and Petroleum Resources (ADM-MPR).

The incumbent performs senior secretarial and administrative duties and functions as the key secretarial support to the ADMs in a fast-paced team environment.

The incumbent ensures that all written documentation confirms to departmental and government formats, procedures and policies.

The incumbent is responsible for coordinating, editing and reviewing documentation provided by six divisions and five regions (the Divisions and Regions).

The ADM's Executive Secretary provides guidance and direction to all Divisional administrative support staff. In addition, the incumbent works closely with the DM's Executive Secretary and the Deputy Minister's Senior Advisor.

A high degree of cooperation is required with these two positions as common issues and urgent requests will require collaboration to complete most tasks.

The majority of the work is self-initiated within established procedures; however, advice and guidance may be solicited from the ADMs and other Directorate staff.

The incumbent will receive either written or verbal assignments regularly from the ADMs, including coordination of meetings, events and travel logistics.

The incumbent deals daily in person or on the telephone with a variety of contacts including departmental staff, officials from other government departments, representatives from Aboriginal Governments and Organizations and the general public.

A high quality of work, punctuality in meeting deadlines and attention to detail in performing duties is required to help maintain a positive reputation for the organization.

Assurance of confidentiality and/or the provision of accurate/correct information is necessary to protect the legal and reputational interests of the organization.


Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

  • Grade 12 diploma, secretarial diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three to five (3-5) years of directly related experience in an office/ administrative environment.
  • Financial and administrative experience within the GNWT or public sector is considered an asset.
  • Equivalencies in both work and volunteer experience will be considered.
