The Role

  • Duties/Responsibilities
  • Supports system upgrades and enhancements. Identifies operational impacts/issues. Exchanges information with vendors and corporate ITS staff, views demos, and tests changes against current practices. Prepares summaries and consults with Analysts for determining rollout/implementation.
  • Consults with team and/or supervisor on complex issues with systems and technologies by compiling and providing information to support problem solving and issue resolution. Works closely with Analysts to receive direction for nonstandard work assignments, for consultation and support regarding complex issues, and for approval of updates to user resources/guides.
  • Develops database queries and ad hoc personnel data reports for client departments. In conjunction with supervisor and team, develops, maintains, and validates database views and objects to increase report and query performance, following basic best practices. Uses software tools to analyze SQL statement structure.
  • Creates reporting standards and templates, and organizes reports to avoid duplication and ensure data consistency. Maintains security settings and access to reports; maintains report indexes for user reference.
  • Modifies existing standard reports per request specifications. Implements reporting solutions using Crystal Reports, Business Objects (Crystal Reports Enterprise Server), Power BI, and Microsoft Reporting Services Visual Studio.
  • Uses documentation tools to track issues and resolutions. Assists and advises users on report configurations, and assists with data analysis as required.
  • Designs and analyses quality assurance reports with team and other users to develop data quality standards.
  • Under supervisor's guidance, conducts and participates in joint projects with ITS, as required.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of supporting human resources systems and customer relationship management systems.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, and collective agreements.
  • Proficiency using reporting and business intelligence technologies (e.g., Power BI, Crystal Reports, Microsoft Visual Studio Reporting Services).
  • Skill in developing queries on relational databases, specifically ORACLE, My SQL or MS-SQL using developer tools (e.g. SQL *Plus and PL/SQL) to create reports.
  • Analytical, time management, organizational, continuous improvement, and problem solving skills to identify trends and develop recommendations; coordinate projects; adapt to changing priorities and balance requests; and work with others to develop realistic, innovative solutions.
  • Communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills to obtain technical assistance and information from vendors and corporate ITS; respond to client/user requests and communicate technical issues in nontechnical terms to obtain and explain information; provide user training, as needed; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to read publications and trade journals, software documentation and hardware manuals, system design and development language documentation, correspondence, technical specifications, programming language, and reports.
  • Ability to write and create training and instructional resources, user manuals and etutorials, procedures, reports/summaries, flowcharts, graphs, and correspondence.
  • Ability to participate in an official standby/oncall rotation to respond to legislated or time sensitive demands beyond regularly scheduled work hours.
  • Ability to travel within Waterloo Region.
