Position Overview:

  • The City of Kitchener is seeking a permanent fulltime Parks Maintainer-Facilities to perform all operation and maintenance activities at its sports field facilities. The position prepares, maintains, and repairs turf and sports fields including synthetic sports fields. Performs winter work duties including snow plowing, salting, shoveling, and patrolling as well as inspection of ice rinks and tobogganing hills.

Responsibilities:


  • Performs operating and maintenance activities at sports field facilities citywide.
  • Performs turf cultural maintenance (e.g., topdressing, seeding, aeration).
  • Prepares proper lining, grooming procedures, and requirements for safe, playable surfaces for baseball diamonds, soccer pitches, football fields, cricket pitches and other programmed sport fields.
  • Installs and maintains home plates, pitching points/mounds, batters' boxes, etc. and lays out sports fields in accordance with official dimensions.
  • Uses ActiveNet scheduling system to look up, confirm, and deal with issues related to bookings.
  • Conducts sports fields and field lighting inspections as well as schedule lights using Musco Control-Link.
  • Maintains record of daily tasks and reports sports field activities and deficiencies.
  • Maintains and cleans outdoor sports facilities including players' benches, backstops, fence lines and under bleachers.
  • Assists with irrigation system repairs.
  • Monitors sports facility grounds for hazards, vandalism and damage and reports unsafe conditions. Collects and disposes of items. Empties garbage receptacles.
  • Operates various types of vehicles and equipment to cut and maintain grass and prepare sport fields for active use.
  • Participate in the winter job pool process which results in the winter job duties assignment i.e. snow plowing, hand shoveling etc.
  • Requirements:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent and have successfully completed the Sport Turf Management & Maintenance Course and the Synthetic Sports Turf Safety and Maintenance Course offered through Sports Turf Canada or equivalent (preference will be given to applicants with these courses, however, applicants will be permitted to obtain these two courses by December 1, 2023).
  • Valid Ministry of Transportation "D" driver's license in good standing and be capable of upgrading to a "DZ" license within a 6month period.
  • Ability to participate as an effective team member.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Turfgrass/Sportsfield maintenance experience and with related equipment.
  • Demonstrated communication skills with a customer service focus and the ability to keep accurate written records.
  • Must be available to work varying shifts, rotational duties, weekends and overtime as required.
  • Must be available for winter call out as required.
  • Must be a competent person as defined by the Ontario Health & Safety Act.
  • Must successfully complete they City of Kitchener's customer service test.
  • Must be able to successfully complete required progressional criteria as it relates to this job title.
