Nature and Scope
The Trades Centre Assistant - Summer Student focuses on support for SIIT's Electrical and Welding programs. As an employee of SIIT, positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission and mandate.


General Accountability


The Trades Centre Assistant - Summer Student will have the opportunity to gain work experience in SIIT's Electrical and Welding programs while developing the skills necessary to be successful in their future.

The summer student will have an opportunity to improve their teamwork and communication skills, as well as, their administrative skills and leadership capabilities.

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the incumbent provides support including setting up classroom, shop space, and equipment.

The summer student will have the opportunity to learn and development the skills required to be a tradesperson or an instructor.

Any shop work will be under the direct supervision of an Electrical or Welding Instructor.

This position provides support as required and includes the following broad range of accountabilities:


Specific Accountabilities

  • Learn and assist how to set up the shop space or classroom in a way that is conducive to meeting a particular learning outcome
  • Set up and arranging benches, gas cylinders, motor control equipment, etc.
  • Ensure that tools and equipment are ready to meet the learning outcomes of students
  • Maintaining tool inventory, maintenance, and demonstration
  • Perform administrative functions that may include, printing, photocopying, and IT set up
  • May be opportunities to assist in instructional prep as required
  • Provide administrative support and backup coverage in the office during periods of high workload and absences
  • Assist in ensuring classroom and program resources are in place, in addition to assisting with the set up and take down of classrooms as required
  • Assist with the organization of travel arrangements, course or conference registrations for the department
  • Assist in data collection and collating of information or documents
  • Assist with special projects and other department initiatives as requested

There may be some summer student positions that must meet the following criteria:

  • First Nations and Inuit secondary and post-secondary students aged 15 to 30 inclusive
  • Ordinarily resident on reserve or in recognized communities or on community lands
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Registered as fulltime students during the preceding academic year and who intend to return to school on a fulltime basis in the next academic year

Position Requirements:
Ability to perform physical activities and lifting up to 50 pounds. A valid driver's licence is required as there is potential for travel to remote/other SIIT locations. An interest in becoming a tradesperson and/or an instructor is an asset. Knowledge of First Nations culture and traditions is considered an asset. Prior experience in construction, working with tools and working with Microsoft Office programs is an asset.
