Are you an experienced communications professional who is looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your community? This is an exciting opportunity to lead the External Communications team at Toronto Community Housing, responsible for media relations and issues management, helping to make positive change for the 110,000 people who live in our communities.

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, this position leads the execution of a media and public relations program to protect, reinforce and enhance Toronto Community Housing's reputation and brand, and advance its strategic priorities.

This position provides counsel to senior management on proactive and reactive management of high profile and sensitive issues; it also serves as corporate spokesperson with the media.

The Strategic Communications team strives to provide a flexible working environment that allows staff to maintain family commitments while delivering high quality work and client service.


What you'll do

  • Advise the Director of Strategic Communications, Vice President of Strategic Planning & Communications and other leaders on strategies for reaching external audiences, including media, the broader public or specific stakeholder groups that TCHC wishes to build relationships with.
  • Manage the external communications and media relations functions for TCHC by ensuring that incoming media inquiries are responded to promptly with accurate information, often on short timelines and outside of normal working hours, and that other external audiences are considered in publicfacing communication.
  • Manage daytoday media services for Toronto Community Housing, including daily media clippings and monthly media monitoring reports
  • Develop and review communications plans and key messages, and prepare TCHC staff for media interviews, news conferences and other speaking opportunities related to those plans.
  • Link key messages, communications strategies and other plans to business goals and strategic priorities
  • Support thought leadership programs by identifying or creating opportunities to bring the organization's platform to life
  • Drive a comprehensive media relations program to support the communications objectives and strategic positioning of Toronto Community Housing, in consultation with the Director, Strategic Communications
  • Lead a team that identifies and leverages public relations opportunities that will support and reinforce positive perceptions of Toronto Community Housing, building confidence and trust in our ability to deliver our mission
  • Participate in ongoing issues management and crisis response processes to identify and mitigate risk
  • Develop and maintain strong, positive and effective working relationships with the media
  • Act as a corporate spokesperson with print, radio, TV and online media, including on sensitive and highrisk issues
  • Manage news conferences and media availabilities
  • When required, provide support to Strategic Planning and Stakeholder Relations on stakeholder and government relations issues

What you'll need

  • Postsecondary degree or diploma from a recognized university or college in corporate communications, public relations, marketing communications, business communications, journalism or English, or equivalent combination of postsecondary education and onthejob experience
  • Minimum of 57 years of experience (810 years preferred) experience in external communications, media relations or public relations roles, with demonstrated experience managing multiple direct reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to be agile, flexible and responsive during fluid crisis situations with the potential to threaten the safety of property or life.
  • Media relations, issues management and spokesperson experience in a complex environment
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication, as well as presentation
  • Experience identifying and analyzing emerging issues and developing strategic responses in tight timeframes
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • A commitment to providing respectful service to all clients
  • Comfortable considering digital and social media as an extension of external communications programs.
  • Experience creating inclusive communication for diverse audiences.
