Job Purpose:


The primary responsibility of the Executive Editor, Non-Fiction, is to identify, acquire and edit lead non-fiction titles for HarperCollins Canada Ltd.

with vision and creativity.

The Executive Editor pursues quality submissions from agents and unagented authors and commissions new titles from house authors and new authors with the potential for strong market performance, impact and rights opportunities.

The Executive Editor has a sound understanding of the strategic direction for the publishing program, has solid financial capability with P&Ls, is able to identify legal issues and has highly developed negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills.

The Executive Editor is a proactive team player who can work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders, while also having a clear passion for big ideas.

The Executive Editor also represents HarperCollins in the publishing community at various events, and maintains strong relationships with agents, authors, the media, and the public.


Responsibilities:


  • Substantive and line edit nonfiction manuscripts, publishing 1012 titles per fiscal year.
  • Identify and acquire highpotential nonfiction projects for the HarperCollins nonfiction list
  • Acquisitions are to be pursued through a variety of sources that include agent submissions, commissions, IP development, and author and colleague referrals and respond to the strategic direction of the publishing program.
  • Project manage and see through to publication multiple books at a time on schedule
  • Generate P&Ls and book costings that meet financial parameters
  • Position books inhouse and externally for maximum success through strong presentations and the preparation of compelling metadata, market comparisons and descriptive copy
  • Communicate regularly with the Editor in Chief and the Publisher
  • Work collaboratively with Art and Managing and Production Editorial
  • Foster a strong relationship with marketing and publicity colleagues and manage author expectations
  • Identify legal issues and conduct legal reviews with counsel if necessary
  • Have an awareness of proper sourcing and a working knowledge of maps and photo sections
  • Contribute actively to increasing Diversity on the HarperCanada publishing program
  • Provide the best possible care and attention to authors
  • Attend launches and industry events and participate in industry outreach representing HarperCollins

Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited university
  • 10 years minimum of experience within media or cultural institutions at a senior level
  • A passion for big ideas and engagement in current affairs and culture
  • A working knowledge of bookspecific financials is an asset
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Strong organizational and projectmanagement skills
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines, determine priorities and pay attention to detail
  • The ability to work individually and collaboratively, and to maintain strong, positive relationships internally and externally
  • A proven track record of industry engagement and outreach
  • A positive attitude with a focus on collaboration and teamwork
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
