Friends of Ruby (FoR) is dedicated to the journey and well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, aged 16-29 through mental health services, social services, and housing.

FoR offers Youth Mental Health services, a Youth Drop-In Centre, and a Transitional Home.

The Centre provides access to barrier-free counselling and therapeutic groups, case management and a drop-in space with hot meals, community, and comprehensive programming.

The Home provides transitional and emergency housing, as well as mental health and life-skills to support youth moving towards independent living.

Position Summary


Reporting to the Director of Transitional Housing, the Housing Manager will provide day-to-day supervision, mentoring and performance management to housing staff.

In addition, encouraging innovation, evaluating performance, and leading staff development through motivation and training, while creating a safe and supportive environment for all residents and staff in the House.


The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervision of Staff_
  • Schedule and ensure an even distribution of hours between staff in accordance with their full/parttime or relief status and considering the level of training required for each position; avoiding gaps and finding last minute coverage when needed, including statutory holidays, sick days, and overtime requirements.
  • Track availability, managing employee's time off and attendance.
  • Daytoday supervision of assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, customer service excellence, and continuous learning.
  • Mentor assigned staff through professional development and performance management corrective coaching and/or disciplinary actions in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures.
  • Performance Management establish clear goal setting, deliverables, tasks, responsibilities with assigned staff and outline expected outcomes and timelines to ensure work accountability.
  • Oversee direct and indirect deliverables of housing staff, providing regular support and checkins.
  • Support the Director of Transitional Housing in the facilitation of regular staff meetings on organizational updates and programspecific matters.
  • Support the Director of Transitional Housing with recruitment, training of staff; and determining appropriate staffing requirements for housing services.
  • Planning, Management & Sustainment_
  • Ensure processes are in place for the team to do housing/shelter intake assessments, screening youth to assess fit to our services and support their transition to sustainable housing.
  • Ensure staff follow organizational policies and operating procedures that are also consistent with any legislation and/or City Standards.
  • Support the effective implementation of Sectoral Guidelines such as Toronto Shelter Standards and provincial transitional housing guidelines.
  • Ensure the facility and services adequately meet the physical, social, and development needs of all residents and the protection of each individual's health, safety, comfort and well
- being.

  • Ensure the effective daytoday operation of the House, programs, and services.
  • Support Case Workers in managing participants selection process for housing, including participant agreements, tenancy agreement administration, residential participant relations for the housing portfolio, supporting the youth in their transition to sustainable housing, while maintaining compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Support Residential Housing Workers (RHW) in their daily tasks engaging with the residents.
  • Manage the City of Toronto Shelter system for residents.
  • Manage crisis, recognize, and provide appropriate intervention as needed while addressing youth conflict directly and respectfully through effective problem solving and conflict resolution.
