Role:


The Heritage Division is seeking a skilled individual to provide professional technical services in the Remington Carriage Museum Restoration Shop.

The position is responsible for the preservation of heritage skills and trades associated with the carriage industry of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries including wheelwright, blacksmith and coach builder, through an active program of research, learning, practicing and disseminating these intangible cultural assets.

The Technician will professionally care for Alberta's cultural property related to horse-drawn transportation, including horse-drawn agricultural and commercial artifacts.


Working with the Supervisor, Restorative Services, the Restoration Shop Technician provides expertise in the applied processes of repair and restoration and in the analysis of technical information as it pertains to horse-drawn vehicles and their components, the manufacturing processes used to make them and the carriage industry as a whole.

This position provides education opportunities and technical information to peers, special interest groups and the general public, through various forms of communication and interaction.


The Technician strives to provide the best possible visitor experience at the Restoration Shop for the betterment and wider appreciation of the Remington Carriage Museum, its' sister facilities in the Heritage Division and general tourism in Alberta.


Qualifications:


Requires a Journeyman's Certificate or above and a minimum of four years of experience in one or more of the trades related to carriage restoration including, but not limited to: cabinetmaker; joiner; carpenter; millwright; machinist; welder; automotive mechanic; auto body technician; auto/marine painter; shipwright.

Equivalencies may be considered.


A superior knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in additional skills such as woodworking, boat building, metal fabrication/restoration (steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, bronze and copper), welding (MIG, TIG, Oxy/Acetylene), antique automotive mechanical systems, mechanical assemblies, electrical systems (AC/DC), sheet metal fabrication, fiberglass fabrication and repair, automotive body repair, artistic airbrushing and pin striping, automotive, residential and commercial upholstery, blacksmithing (both artistic and productive) and automotive or industrial spray painting.

A superior knowledge of specialized restoration and preservation equipment and techniques.

Exceptional trouble shooting and problem-solving skills.

Must be able to clearly convey in oral and written forms the skills involved in carriage restoration.

Ability to organize and operate in an efficient manner.

Must be able to interact with the visiting public in a knowledgeable and congenial manner.

Requires sufficient analytical, research and report writing skills supported by a degree of computer literacy.

Must have a valid Alberta driver's license, class 5 or above, and provide a driver's abstract.

Working knowledge of securing and transporting large artifacts.

Must be able to lift objects weighing 20 to 30 kilograms.


Ability to safely operate site equipment (machinery, tools, order picker, dual-wheeled one and two ton trucks with stock and custom trailers).

Experience working with horses or driving carriages an asset.

Requires St.

John's or Red Cross Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate, WHIMIS training, "Fall Arrest" training and a working knowledge of good Occupational Health and Safety practices.
