PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER (PSW)

The Behavioral Support Unit (BSU) is an integral part of the continuum of care to enhance the quality of life for the residents who are living with responsive behaviors and to provide support families with compassion and understanding during their stay on the BSU.

This position is for our Extendicare Kingston home, located in Kingston Ontario.

Permanent Full-Time (11am-7pm)

What you'll be doing

  • Provides residentcentred focused, culturally appropriate care
  • Understands residents and families' needs
  • Protects resident's rights and advocacy role for the resident and families
  • Understands and commitments to the BSU Model of Care and the principles of the Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO)
  • Develops therapeutic relationships with residents and families
  • Implements best practice in dementia, delirium and mental health conditions based on scope of practice
  • Demonstrates troubleshooting and problemsolving approaches relative to the situation within the scope of practice and reports to the registered staff and leadership team
  • Assists in providing direct care for residents; assists with ambulation, feeding, bathing and grooming.
  • Encourages participation in activity programs by assisting residents to and from activities
  • Assists with the development of activity programs with interdisciplinary team and participates in activities with residents
  • Assists with meal service and nourishment delivery to residents and provides feeding assistance as required.
  • Provides emotional and social support to residents/families including palliative care.
  • Adheres to established departmental polices and procedures regarding documentation, quality assurance, fire, safety, environment and infection control.
  • Consults with and informs supervisor of unit activities, needs and matters related to resident care.
  • Participates in care conferences and documentation related to resident care plans.
  • Other duties as assigned
What you bring

  • Completed a PSW Program that meets the appropriate standards established by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, the National Association of Career Colleges, or the Ontario Community Support Association and must be a minimum of 600 hours in duration (including class time and practical experience time)
  • Experience in longterm care required
  • Knowledge and experience in care planning systems and documentation required
  • Capable and physically able to perform duties as assigned
  • Ability to communicate positively with other staff, residents and families
  • Demonstrates empathy, concern and interest in providing quality care and service to residents
  • Demonstrates organizational skills and ability to complete assignments in a timely fashion
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Vulnerable Sector Screening is required
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill working with individuals with various types of dementia, delirium, mental health, other neurological conditions, and those who experience an acute behavioural change
  • Training in Gentle Persuasive Approach, U-First and DementiAbility is preferred
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm, flexibility and ability to cope with change
  • Demonstrates effectiveness as a team member through collaboration, respect and effective communication skills in interacting with residents, families and other members of the interprofessional care teams, including community and primary care team members
