The Plant and Animal Health Branch provides veterinary diagnostic laboratory and disease investigation services for the Province.

The Animal Health Centre is the provincial veterinary diagnostic laboratory and is a major part of the Plant and Animal Health Branch, which has the mandate to provide diagnostic, monitoring, investigative, surveillance and regulatory programs for livestock, poultry and finfish production industries of British Columbia.


Reporting to the Animal Health Centre (AHC) Director, as Section Head of Histology and Post Mortem this position provides supervision, and oversight for the Histology Unit and Post Mortem Unit and facilities, including managing staff and financial resources, managing stakeholder relationships, and quality assurance and biosafety program standards in a consistent manner.

This position also participates in provincial policy development and oversees program delivery and professional projects.


This position plays a key role in supporting the Plant and Animal Health Centre Biosafety and Biosecurity Program by overseeing all activities in the Post Mortem facility including staff activities, containment procedures, management of biological material and waste, supervision and oversight of visitors, contractors and temporary staff, all in compliance with facility biocontainment licensing and standards.

This position will be the primary on-site contact for the Plant and Animal Health Centre (PAHC) facility matters with a focus on Post Mortem facilities, addressing day-to-day needs of operations.

This position will also act as an AHC lab liaison with the CFIA, industry and other stakeholders during high consequence disease outbreaks and other emergency situations.

This position may also participate in diagnostic activities in the Post Mortem room and/or Histology laboratory as needed.


This position provides expertise in the field of necropsy, parasitology, histology and/or post mortem biocontainment as the Section Head for Histology and Post Mortem of the Animal Health Centre.

Utilizing technical skills and abilities as well as knowledge and experience this position maintains operations and functions of Histology and Post Mortem facilities.

As Section Head this position leads the Animal Health Centre Histology Unit and Post Mortem Unit by providing direct supervision of technical laboratory staff in both the Histology unit and Post Mortem room.

This position is required to maintain technical skills and abilities in selected areas of diagnostic testing such as Histology and Post Mortem (necropsy and parasitology).


Job Requirements:


  • Bachelor of Science
    plus a minimum of 3 (three) years' experience in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory,
    OR:
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 1 (one) year experience in the supervision and management of laboratory sections and operations in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory setting.
  • Minimum 1 (one) year experience in leading or participating in Biosafety and Quality Management programs within laboratory sections.
  • Minimum 1 (one) year experience leading staff on projects or program delivery.
Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • Minimum 3 (three) years' experience working in Post-mortem room and/or Histology laboratory sections in an accredited (AAVLD or ISO/IEC veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
  • Minimum 1 (one) year experience in supervising and managing Postmortem room and/or Histology laboratory sections in an accredited (AAVLD or ISO/IEC in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
  • Minimum 1 (one) year experience in providing leadership, including managing a team and overseeing projects and/or programs.

Provisos:

  • Must possess a valid B.C. driver's licence.
  • Must be willing to participate in the PAHB rabies vaccination and surveillance program.
  • Must be willing to meet safety standards of Work Safe BC
