Job Summary


The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a partnership between the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine, established in 2017.

Currently the School has 36 core and joint faculty located on campus and at healthcare research institutes, 400+ undergraduate and undergraduate students, 20+ administrative staff and several research core service facilities.

In addition, SBME will move in 2024/2025 into a new building on campus, which will act as a hub for biomedical engineering activities at UBC and beyond.

The School is a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation, aspiring to be a global leader in the field.

Its vision is to transform health care outcomes through unconstrained exploration of the best possible integrative solutions across engineering, medicine, and biology.


The Teaching Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing the School's undergraduate teaching laboratory facilities currently based in two separate buildings, which host more than five courses per year and growing.

The labs offered are quite diverse and span a wide range of biomedical engineering topics, including biomechanics, biomedical instrumentation, cellular bioengineering, rapid prototyping, and biochemistry.

The position is responsible for overall teaching lab management, safety, budget forecasting and financial reporting; managing and overseeing laboratories' budgets, preparing budget reports and summaries, and research and analysis.

The Teaching Lab Manager is also responsible for authorizing and overseeing all teaching lab expenditures and purchases.

Organizational Status


The Teaching Laboratory Manager is independently responsible for the efficient operation of the array of undergraduate laboratories within the School.

This individual will interact with faculty members and teaching assistants leading the courses, SBME staff, and the undergraduate students participating in the labs.

This position reports to the Director of Strategic Planning and Operations and the Director of the Undergraduate Program.

Work Performed

  • Oversees the daily operations of the laboratory spaces, including enforcement of lab safety guidelines and ensuring compliance with UBC safety guidelines, as well as coordination of waste disposal, including hazardous wastes. This includes establishing workflow improvement initiatives where necessary and ensuring best practices for student and worker health and chemical safety, security and privacy in a laboratory environment.
  • Supports instructors with their experiential learning initiatives and needs; being a central support person for capstone, which includes coordinating student projects, orders, lab space allocation, and other logistics.
  • Trains and supervises all undergraduate students and trains and assigns work to teaching assistants and junior technicians in the laboratory. Works closely with the teaching lab technician(s).
  • Authorizing and overseeing all teaching lab expenditures and purchases and monitoring operating expenses to ensure that they are within the current operating budget, resolving discrepancies and directing the transfer of funds as necessary.
  • Responsible for overall lab management, budget forecasting and financial reporting; managing and overseeing laboratories' budgets, preparing budget reports and summaries, and research and analysis. This includes the development of a budget tracker and providing quarterly updates to the School's leadership.
