The Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth (MACY) is an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly and is independent of government.

The Manitoba Advocate's statutory mandate includes representing the rights, interests, and viewpoints of children, youth, and young adults receiving any designated or reviewable services as described under _The Advocate for Children and Youth Act_.

The Manitoba Advocate also reviews and reports upon the standards and quality of those reviewable and designated services provided to children, youth, and young adults who have died, to educate the public and to enhance the safety and well-being of Manitoba children, youth, and young adults.


Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Prior Contact Check, Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check.
  • Must possess a valid Manitoba Driver's License, access to a vehicle, and ability and willingness to travel throughout Manitoba. Some travel outside of Manitoba may be required.

Qualifications:

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience providing culturally proficient counselling, handling sensitive situations and maintaining confidentiality is essential.
  • Experience providing sweat ceremonies and spiritual activities within an Indigenous community is essential.
  • Knowledge and understanding of provincial child and youth serving public systems, including services/systems such as: child and family, youth justice, addictions, disabilities, mental health, education and victim support, including associated regulations, legislation and standards.
  • Working knowledge of First Nations and Metis history and culture in Manitoba and the aims and objectives of First Nations and Metis with respect to the provisions of culturally appropriate services. The ability to communicate in one of Manitoba's First Nations languages is an asset.
  • Familiarity with children's rights, especially the articles of the _United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child_ (UNCRC) and familiarity with _The_ _Advocate for Children and Youth Act_.
  • Proven communication skills and ability to effectively solve problems are required.
  • Knowledge and lifelong experience with traditional Indigenous teachings, with an understanding that teachings may vary from Indigenous community to Indigenous community, but many commonalities exist.
  • Ability to work in a fastpaced, confidential environment with highly sensitive material.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and conduct round table discussions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management.

Desired Criteria:

  • Ability to communicate in an Indigenous language or in French.
  • Ability to use and knowledge of automated management information and case tracking systems and word processing software.

Duties:


Reporting to the Indigenous Deputy Advocate, the Indigenous Knowledge Keeper will provide opportunities for children, youth, young adults and staff to gain knowledge and understanding of Indigenous history, traditions, teachings and ceremonies for the purpose of increasing, understanding and creating awareness and cultural proficiency of the MACY office.

The Indigenous Knowledge Keeper will be responsible for conducting check-ins with staff to offer opportunities to counsel in matters of case work and general well-being in the workplace.

The Indigenous Knowledge Keeper will also provide opportunities for counsel and cultural meetings with the Youth Ambassador Advisory Squad. The Indigenous Knowledge Keeper will also be responsible for documentation, compiling statistics, and general record keeping.
