Nature of Assignment:


The Oral Communication Skills program addresses students' listening and speaking skills, along with vocabulary expansion and critical thinking to meet their academic needs.

Given the diversity of needs, the Oral Communication Skills instructor will conduct in-person workshops, some of which are in the style of Communication Cafes as well as other specially designed highly interactive sessions that develop students' confidence and competence in listening and speaking.

Online sessions focusing on developing listening skills for course needs as well as personal coaching in addressing individual oral communication issues (e.g. articulation and pronunciation) will be conducted in a group as well as one-on-one sessions.

Where necessary to meet the individual learning needs of English Language Learners, the Oral Communication Skills instructor will guide students in using GenAI to gain additional language usage practice in between sessions.

Qualifications:


Required:

  • A minimum Master's degree in a relevant field
  • Proven track record for supporting the development of critical thinking and academic communication skills of university students for whom English is an additional language
  • Relevant experience teaching writing oneonone;
  • Experience developing and delivering courses and/or workshops using a studentcentered, activityoriented approach
  • High level of creativity in teaching and resource development
  • Experience working with firstyear undergraduates, providing feedback to ELLs on their academic communication skills
  • Experience developing original pedagogical materials which have been assessed to be effective
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience using various media and digital learning tools

Preferred:

  • Proven success in developing innovative programming that serve pedagogical purposes in higher education
  • Experience and success in the development of online learning modules or digital objects
  • Instructor should have a demonstrated commitment to fostering equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Experience with GenAI in higher education instructional settings with ELLs
  • For this position, the Centre for Teaching and Learning favours applicants with a longterm commitment to English Language Development Support teaching._

Description of duties:


The chief duty of the Oral Communication Skills instructor is to support students wishing to develop their aural/oral skills and critical thinking needed for success at university.

This is achieved through in-person workshops and CTL's signature Communication Cafes where learning is highly interactive and takes place in a supportive class setting.

In addition, the instructor will also conduct online group sessions and one-on-one sessions to coach students in areas related to vocabulary, note-taking and other related academic listening/speaking needs.

Should student enrolment in the program be lower than expected, the Oral Communication Skills instructor will, in consultation with the English Language Development Support Coordinator, produce pedagogical material to be used online to help students improve oral communication skills.

Pedagogy incorporating the use of GenAI for additional language practice by students is desirable.
