What Does a Maintenance Operator Do?:

With Instructions from the Patrol Supervisor, the Maintenance Operators will work together to perform repairs and maintain the highway infrastructure, ensuring it meets the performance requirements outlined in the Directed Maintenance Contract.

This could include physically demanding duties such as pothole repairs, installing small signs, end treatments to debris pick up while assisting the emergency response operators and patrollers on the highway.

You may be required to operator a loader, crash truck, sign truck and participate in winter operations.


As a Maintenance Operator, You Will:

  • Make repairs to the highway including but not limited to pothole repairs, installing small signs, end treatments, guiderails, washing bridges, sweeping, grass cutting etc.
  • Become familiar with contract performance requirements
  • Operate heavy equipment like graders and loaders
  • Assist in providing traffic control at work zones and at accident scenes. Set up and take down OTM book 7 traffic closures
  • Aid the Emergency Response team to implement an emergency plan in situations such as spills, accidents, inclement weather etc.
  • Conduct daily circle checks of equipment before driving them out
  • Clean and maintain equipment and perform minor repairs. Ensure fuel and other fluid levels are optimum
  • Perform housekeeping duties to ensure the shop, common areas and exterior of the yard are clean and safe
  • Maintain accurate documentation of hours of service, fuel records, time sheets etc.
  • Patrol in winter
  • Work on Emergency Response crew when required
  • Other duties as assigned

What You'll Bring:


  • DZ license required
  • 1+ years' experience in Road maintenance and knowledge of OTM book 7 through prior positions including snowplow operation, landscaping etc. are strong assets
  • Mechanically inclined to operate small tools and heavy equipment. Crash Truck experience is an asset
  • Willingness to learn and appreciate Miller Values

  • Excellent team player to work productively in a highly functional team
  • Flexibility and organizational skills to multitask and manage time in a fastpaced environment with rapidly shifting priorities
  • Basic computer skills and effective communication (both written and verbal) to accurately document daily activities etc.
  • Willingness to remain on call occasionally and work assigned day, night, and weekend shifts Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work/drive outside in inclement weather conditions
