Qualifications:


  • Graduate of a Health Records/Information Management Program
  • Certification in Health Information Management Association (CHIMA)
  • Maintain active membership in CHIMA and complete required continuing professional education

Required Skills:


  • Demonstrated knowledge of international coding system
  • Demonstrated knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, medical terminology and pharmacology
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CIHI data abstraction, data quality initiatives, retrieval, interpretation, presentation and related computer systems and software
  • Good work and attendance record.
  • Minimum one year coding/abstracting inpatient, day surgery, emergency room and clinic visits using ICD10/CCI
  • Meditech experience preferred
  • Minimum one (1) years clinical experience in a healthcare setting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point

  • Ability to prepare correspondence and reports; as well as, sort, review and file various documents
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member, with a high degree of precision, paying attention to detail or order to achieve the high levels of accuracy required
  • Demonstrate initiative and good judgment in problem solving and identifying opportunities for action
  • Demonstrated understanding and compliance with confidentiality requirements
  • Excellent understanding of Medical Terminology and Pharmaceutical terms
  • Excellent verbal, written, telephone and computer skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with patients, physicians, hospital staff and public
  • Professional demeanour
  • Proven organizational, analytical service orientation
  • Excellent understanding of CIHI coding standards and other relevant resources
  • Maintains confidentiality and understands privacy
  • Understands data quality issues
  • Willing to continually update skills and knowledge
