Major Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Manager, Healthy Environments, the Field Operator - West Nile Virus / Vector Borne Disease will carry out field and analytical work in support of the monitoring program.


  • Prepares CDC light traps and coolers for service provider use
  • Conducts quality assurance checks of the CDC light traps set by the service provider
  • Cleans all laboratory equipment manually as required
  • Conducts quality assurance of catch basin treatment by the applicator
  • Conducts surveys of Toronto Parks to determine the extent and production of mosquito breeding grounds (where females lay eggs, larvae and pupae develop and adults emerge)
  • Conducts WNV standing water investigations in response to complaints on public property.
  • Assists Public Health Inspectors (PHI) with larvae identification for standing water complaints on private property
  • Reviews weekly mosquito surveillance information to determine where environmental scans are required
  • Conducts environmental scans and enters results into Toronto Healthy Environments Information System (THEIS)
  • Monitors surface water sites for mosquito larvae and makes referrals to contract service provider for larviciding of the site
  • Liaises with external groups as directed (e.g., Parks, Forestry and Recreation (PFR) or pest control companies relevant to reducing mosquito breeding site)
  • Records physical information and Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates GPS handheld units at each surface water site
  • Samples surface water for mosquito larval and inputs information into THEIS
  • Identifies different species of larvae or at least to genera using Mosquito identification guide
  • Provides and carries out speaking engagements for community and businesses as directed
  • Conducts tick dragging as required
  • Identifies ticks collected and inputs data into THEIS
  • Assist PHI with passive tick identification
  • Assists in implementation of Vector Borne Diseases operational plan
  • Participates in media events as required

Key Qualifications:


  • Postsecondary education in Environmental Sciences (Biology, Chemistry) or approved equivalent of education and experience. Preference will be given to applicants with training and proficiency in bacteriology and vector borne diseases.
  • Experience in mosquito identification and testing; and tick dragging, including tick identification.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Possession of a valid Ontario Driver's Licence Class "G" and access to a vehicle.

You must also have:


  • Knowledge of instrumental methods of analysis, and some experience with microscopy.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Must be available to travel to other work locations, as required.
