Avalon Sexual Assault Centre provides a continuum of supports and services to individuals affected by sexualized violence. We've been a safe space and an advocate for survivors since 1983. Our feminist organization is rooted in the community and committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion. We provide services in the Halifax region and across Nova Scotia.


About the Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic Navigation Coordinator to join our team.

Working closely with and reporting to the Director of Operations, the Navigation Coordinator is responsible for leading Avalon's Community and Legal Navigation programs.

The ideal Navigation Coordinator will possess strong project management skills, a proven track record of effectively leading teams, and experience navigating diverse client requirements.


Key Responsibilities

  • Community and Legal Navigation Program Leadership_
  • Provide ongoing support to Community and Legal Navigation teams including consultation on client matters, ensuring necessary resources are available, and providing coverage during vacation and wellness time.
  • Assist in establishing and monitoring staff performance and development goals.
  • Create systems and processes to support Community and Legal Navigation work.
  • Collaborate with leadership team to evaluate and update relevant policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with external consultant and key staff to create and monitor Community and Legal Navigation evaluation plan.
  • Collaborate with leadership team on resource allocation and budgeting.
  • Network with key systems (healthcare, schools, housing, legal, etc.) and organizations to increase awareness about Avalon's programs and services.
  • Collaborate with partner community organizations to facilitate access to support and appropriate community and systemsbased resources.
  • Oversee community education and advocacy initiatives and facilitate training sessions as required.
  • Project Management_
  • Develop project management tools including workflow processes and schedules to ensure cohesion, collaboration, and continuity across Community and Legal Navigation programs.
  • Contribute to the strategic development, implementation, and expansion of the Community and Legal Navigation programs.
  • Take lead on key projects that support Community and Legal Navigation programs as they arise.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Navigation Client Load_
  • Maintain a small case load supporting survivors in navigating community, legal, and systemsbased supports as well as accessing Avalon program and supports.
  • Establish relationships of trust with survivors by providing emotional and practical support in the office, online, or on scene.
  • Explore the needs of the survivor in relation to criminal justice responses, support programs, and community agencies, and assists in their understanding and access to these options through sharing information and facilitating referrals.

Qualifications

  • University degree in social work, psychology, or a related field an asset. Relevant professional experience or lived experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum 23 years of progressive experience, demonstrating a proven track record of effectively leading multifunctional teams.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to monitor and track priorities, develop and implement workplans, monitor progress toward goals, and track data, information, and activities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of feminist and traumainformed practice.
  • Understanding of community models of care, with commitment to antioppressive, antiracist, and inclusive values.
  • Knowledge of the intersectional dimension of systemic inequalities and oppression, including but not limited to racism, colonialism, sexism/misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, classism/poverty, ableism, ageism, etc.

Additional Competencies and Knowledge

  • Understanding of sexualized violence and sexual assault trauma.
  • Knowledge of the cultural and social contexts that contribute to sexualized violence and its impacts on individuals and communities and experience working with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of the impacts of trauma work on staff, as well as best practices to mitigate vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout.
  • Knowledge of the legal system is an asset.
