The Console Room Officer is accountable for monitoring the execution of production plans developed for the shift in a major mechanized mail processing plant and is accountable for meeting related performance objectives.

Monitors and controls the flow of mail to work areas within the plant; anticipates and mitigates stoppages and improves productivity in work centers of responsibility.

Monitors the operation of various processing systems to ensure employee safety, security of the mail and correct operation of mechanized equipment.

Has authority to stop the various processing systems within the plant at any time when safety is being compromised, and has the sole authority to re-start the equipment following confirmation from Technical Services that it is safe to do so.


Responsibilities:

Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Officer, Console Room.

  • Monitors and controls all aspects of the mechanized mail processing production plan during the shift to ensure that the mail moves through the plant on a continuous flow as per plan and as per related scorecard targets. This includes but is not limited to equipment downtime, rate of throughput, reject rates and recirculation levels. Ensures the proper sequence of conveyors throughout the plant by activating computerized controls.
  • Actively looks for opportunities to optimize the flow of the mail, anticipating and mitigating incidents which could negatively impact mail processing operations. Also ensures despatches are met, runouts are kept clear, and free of obstruction.
  • Advises Shift Expeditor, Shift Superintendent/Supervisors and Dock Supervisors when an activity on the plant floor and/or equipment performance is inconsistent with the production plan so that they can take appropriate action.
  • Monitors via camera and HMI systems the computerized operations of mechanized mail processing equipment within the plant. Looks for unexpected jams, stops or safety issues affecting the operators, Technical Services staff, the physical integrity of the mail, and equipment. Advises front line superintendents/supervisors of the affected mail processing area to allow them to implement contingency plans and ensure service and production targets continue to be met.
  • Ensures the safety of Technicians performing corrective maintenance or repairs on various processing systems. Is the single authority to restart equipment, and only upon assurance from the Technician(s) that it is safe to do so once the work is complete. Advises Superintendents/Supervisors in the affected processing area of the plant that the systems are back in operation and available for production.

Job Responsibilities (continued):


  • Maintains a log of events (including alarms/warnings/equipment downtime) occurring during the shift and completes various reports including but not limited to inventory on hand, equipment performance, shift end report, maintenance windows, variance analysis, SIS and shift production problems. Follows up on equipment related events and issues through to resolution and ensures validity of data reported in reports. Issues are escalated within a set period of time if improvement or change not noted.
  • Attends daily shift status meetings with frontline and mail operations support representatives. Reports any mechanized mail processing anomalies and equipment breakdowns, and outlines contingency plans implemented to maintain production on plan. Briefs replacement console room officer prior to shift end.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with key stakeholders, including frontline team leaders and managers; promotes corporate values and service and quality. Interacts and depends, on a daily basis, with key relationships such as Technical Services, PC&R and plant floor management.
  • Ensures that at start of next shift that all equipment is cleared from previous process, indicators are reset, equipment reset up at all runouts and induction points and any outstanding issues have been identified for resolution.

Qualifications:

Education

  • High School diploma or provincial equivalent (GED) (Equivalent Experience may be accepted in lieu of a High School Diploma)
Experience

  • Minimum 1 year experience managing a team within a unionized environment OR Minimum 2 years' experience working within a unionized environment
