Job Summary


The Advisor Media Relations is responsible for supporting media relations planning, relationship management, campaign execution, issues and crisis management in collaboration with Public Affairs Leads in Canada and the United States (U.S.).

Moreover, the role is able to identify, provide counsel and solutions regarding complex issues, and will foster positive relations with media across CN's network.


Main Responsibilities

Media Relations

  • Receive media and stakeholders' requests, extract pertinent information, and prepare an appropriate response
  • Act as trusted advisor to CN colleagues on media matters and provide expertise on strategic projects and issues management in collaboration with Public Affairs
  • Monitor media across the network
  • Prepare media summaries every day and on an ad hoc basis
  • Prepare responses based on specific events or incidents leading to a network disruption
  • Respond to incidents both remotely and onlocation as part of oncall duties
  • Recommend strategies and tactics to achieve objectives with media and public campaigns
  • Draft notes, communication plans, press releases, and public materials
  • Create communication plans for major events
  • Collaborate with executives on specific public responses
  • Participate in adhoc projects

Handle emerging issues

  • Engage internal stakeholders proactively in anticipation of critical issues
  • Anticipate issues and be ready to engage proactively
  • Maintain awareness of news stories and public issues that could have a negative impact on CN

Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. The role requires mínimal travel (5%) within Canada and the U.S.

Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.


Requirements:


Experience
Media Relations

  • Between 5 to 7 years of experience in economics, politics, public policy, political science, journalism, public affairs, or law
  • Experience in media relations
  • Experience in communications
  • Experience in community relations


  • Experience in railway

  • Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field
