The Granite Club is looking for a Head Guard/Aquatics Instructor to provide on deck supervision/guidance of hourly staff; safe and effective supervision of members in and around the pool area, performance of first aid and water rescue and to provide quality aquatic instruction.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision, guidance and coaching to instructors and lifeguards in the absence of Supervisors.
  • Set up proper guard rotations and determine timing for staff lunch and dinner breaks.
  • Complete supervisory report
  • Complete Angus reports for facility repairs etc.
  • Performance of water rescue and first aid when necessary.
  • Safe and effective supervision of the pool and area during fitness and recreational swims (according to rules specified in employee handbook).
  • Ensure pool area is kept neat pick up towels, toys, training equip. etc; clean out filter baskets. and direct staff to complete the above when necessary.
  • Assist members: explain lane swimming procedures, stroke improvement, explain use of training equipment, pulse check etc.
  • Ensure monitoring and recording of water (every 4 hrs.) conditions; temperature, chlorine, PH, etc., throughout shift, on daily report form. Add chlorine if necessary and contact SPA with any serious water imbalance issues.
  • Ensure rescue equipment is in good working order/report otherwise (including oxygen, first aid box).
  • Ensure daily aquatic report is completed.
  • Maintain accurate statistics on casual pool use.
  • Encourage all members to sign daily attendance sheet and guest sheet (if necessary).
  • Ensure completion of accident and incident reports and followup when necessary.
  • Ensure timely set up and removal of racing lane ropes when necessary.
  • Instruction of swim classes as assigned.
  • Provide feedback to members on participant's progress when requested.
  • Complete progress cards and worksheets at end of each instructional series.
  • Keep records of participant's progress and attendance throughout series of lessons.
  • Screening of participants in classes and move to more appropriate level if necessary.
  • Preparation of lesson plans.
  • In coordination with Assistant Aquatic Manager, provide performance feedback to part time instructors and guarding staff
  • Assist with inservice training of aquatic staff.
  • Answer telephone/provide information to members re: programs, schedule and special events.
  • Provide private instruction when required.
  • Attend and assist with special section functions as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Red Cross/ Life Saving Society Instructor certification
  • L.S.S. National Lifeguard certification
  • First Aid and C.P.R. certification
  • High Five (Principle of Healthy Child Development)
  • High School Graduate
  • Ability to communicate effectively good P.R. skills, excellent oral and written English skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • 2 years active aquatic experience
  • Flexible to work variable shifts weekends and Holidays
